Speedo Cable?

Hi All:

Dealing with a problems that I've ignored for far too long. My speedo jumps way too much 10-15MPH swings driving and the gas pedal relatively stable. Secondly and this week - it dies on me momentarily. I was driving and it just went to zero. I could accelerate / decel and no speedo movement. Less than 5 minutes later, it's back to fully operational (jumpy though). I thought I'd just replace the cable and be done with it.

I can easily get the speedo side off, I can unscrew the tranny side but cannot get the cable out of the yellow plastic housing that goes into the tranny housing. I'm reluctant to just 'yank it'. I thought I'd ask first.

Any opinion if this is rust (apply force) or I need to unscrew the yello housing. I THINK I have a 1098 tranny with a 1275 engine. Replaced 15+ years ago and I don't remember if I kept or repl the tranny along with the engine.

Thanks all.

it should just pull out of the drive gear once you undo the knurled nut, but it can "weld" itself to the plastic gear over time when the cable gets hot from lack of lubrication, so you may have to remove the drive assy housing and maybe heat it up a bit with a hairdryer or such

Sounds like the speedometer pinion is bad. When I changed mine I had to "wiggle" the housing holding the pinion out of the transmission. it just slips in and out. Mine is a 1500. The pinion is specific for each (at least in my midget) so you have to match the correct pinion so you get the correct speed reading on the speedometer. It was actually very easy to do. I pulled the cable out of the housing to inspect it and it was fine. I greased it back up and slid it back in. I had not had a functioning speedometer for 30 years and figured it was time to fix it. Turned out to be an easy fix. Hope this helps.
