Hi Folks,

What is the best "NGK" spark plug to run in my '73 TR6?

Thanx, Russ

Russ,

Yeah, you will probably get differing opinions on the subject....

I use Champion RN12YC (preferred) or the NGK BP5ES plugs.

The replies are funny!

My TR now has "Champion N12YC" not "RN12YC". What's the difference?

Thanx, Russ

I think the R stands for resistor. I think they can be used pretty much interchangeably in cars without radios and other electronics but cars with radios and such should use the R plugs. Tom

Champion L87Y (what I have installed now) or NGK BP5HS

At the risk of reigniting the feud..... I had problems with the Champion plugs a few years back and switched to the NGK. I wonder where the Champions were originally made and where they are made now?

Well, perhaps this is not a new issue. I distinctly remember, back in the 1970s, my local dealer service and parts department folks tell me that, because of various problems, they would routinely remove the OE British-made Champion plugs from cars and replace them with...American-made Champion plugs. Go figure!

Another plug to ponder is the triple-electrode NGK BP5ET. I use them in my VW and Jaguar. The difference is noticeable in the VW (anything that improves a VW is noticeable) but not really noticeable in the Jaguar.

I really thought the triple electrode was just a gimmick (like triple-bladed razors) but heard so many recommendations (VW Forum) that I tried them. I also put one side-by-side with the Champion N12Y plug (both new) in a spark plug tester I have:

I've been using the NGK BUR5ET for several thousand miles in my TR6
I had to enrichen the mixture a tad more than with my tried and true Champion RN12YC

PB, any noticible difference when driving? I might try them next plug change.

It was a little over a year ago I made that transition, Tush, but at the time I think I noticed a a little smoother transition from cruising to acceleration when I gave it the gas.
Seems like there is less carbon residue left behind in the tail pipe, too, which could be a indication of a more complete burn.
I read about them on The TR Register Forum and ordered them from the GreenSparkPlugCo. over on the island...They come without screw on terminals, so you'll have to rob or order those.

I've run NGK BPR6 EIX iridium plugs in my TR6 for ~15 years on my stock, 44K mile TR6. I noticed slightly easier starting w/ the fine wires, but that's about all I'd expect to see on a healthy car. I've been a big fan of fine wire plugs since my Can Am 125 days.....(showing age).

Does anyone know the difference between the Champion L87Y and the L87YC. The former is the stock plug recc'd by Moss and the latter is what pops up on Champion's website. Also, are there some TR3/3A/4 that use a short reach plug and others a long reach? I feel like I should know this. I just purchased plugs from TRF and plopped them in the car. Didn't pay much attention to them. It seems to run fine, except for that **** pinging under load at 3,000 rpm.

Thanks

Pat
