Rostyle Refinish

Now that winter is here I have a little extra time so I am planning on refinishing my wheels. First what color silver is appropriate for the wheels? Is the black color gloss or semi gloss? Lastly where can I get a paint mask to put on the wheels? I have planned on sand blasting the DPO applied dark green paint off them. Is this the correct method or would stripping with chemicals work better? Ok, enough questions for now. Merry Christmas everbody!

John -

Forum member TNMGB did hers a while back - came out beautifully. Argent silver is a good color, and the black is not a very glossy black, but not really flat either. TNMGB can probably give you the info for the paint she used.

Dosn't someone here advertise masks in the classifieds area, they use to.

I've used Rustoleum semigloss gloss black with good results for the centers. Not too glossy, not too dull.

I hate the masks. I just use wide painters taps and tape over the Rostyle pressing outline. Trace it out with a sharp exacto/snapoff knife and you get a perfect paint edge.

I just did mine the old fashioned way, masking tape, x-acto knofe, and paint. Took a while, but looked great in the end. The plastic masks suck and are a waste of money, imo. The paint will blow underneath them every time. Adhesive masks would be very good, I think.

Yup. Can't beat tape and an X-acto blade. Tried the mask ONE time. FUBAR. Back to tape. Even once did a set using the car colour in place of the black. Car was a non-standard maroon Lincoln paint IIRC. That actually looked kinda nice, IMO.

Right, the old one-piece rigid mask does not work but my self adhesive die-cut masks work perfectly. Anyone who would like a sample piece mailed out to them send me a PM. You can see pics over at MGB Experience on a similar thread.

Was the original silver area on the wheels paint or chrome?

Paint.

Although there are some chromed ones out there, most were painted from the factory.

That's great! That means I can restore the half dozen ones I have. I thought they were all originally chrome.

Sandblasting vs. chemical remover...I prefer sandblasting as it removes all surface rust and even other small scratches and imperfections leaving a nice uniform "micro" pitted surface for better paint adherance. A good primer following the usual metal etch process should give you a superior bond. While you're at it, blast the inner wheel where the tubless beads sit...its amazing what little problems can develop with rust or other crud settling on these important surfaces.

Add a set of brand new stainless trim rings after you've painted them, and - Bam!!!! They look awsome!
