removal of push-pull dash control buttons

I am currently in the dismantling phase of restoring my '62 TR4. Have a simple question regarding removal of the heater and vent control buttons. I don't see how to remove them. Removed the threaded rings that secure them to the dash support but the knobs must come off to facilitate removal. I see small holes in the knobs but don't see how to release the knob from the slider. Don't want to break anything. Can anyone help?

I used a pick to push in the small hole - that releases the knob from the switch. IIRC, knobs attached to the cables may work a little different and the cable stays with the knob - it's been a couple of months since I pulled the dash out.

Aloha,

Those small holes, usually oriented on the bottom of the knob, provide access to a pin mounted on the end of a piece of spring steel on the shaft. A small pick or stiff wire inserted in the hole will push up the pin so you can remove the knob from shaft. Over time these knobs can stick on the shaft so if you have difficulty removing the knob, a bit of lubricant through the hole and down the shaft will help free it up. Good luck.

And when you push a needle, pin, small rod, nail punch, pin remover, or whatever, don't be surprised if you still get hung up.

I've had to depress the little button, wiggle and pull, and sometimes horse them off.

Start gentle and it might feel it's way off. Many will just slide right off with no fanfare.

Good luck.

I have always used an opened up small paper clip. Good part about using a paper clip is you don't have to remember where you put it since there are always a bunch of them in the bottom of a desk drawer.
