Re-torquing Head Nuts

Bob, I talked to Bruce Phillips of Healey Surgeons about it some years ago and he said he had never found a satisfactory way to torque the Head Studs on the 6 cylinder Healeys without taking the rocker arms off. He told me that he had tried to make his own wrenches, etc and even tried the crows foot type of wrench and none of it was any good for retorqueing the heads bolts. I know it is a PITA but I have removed shaft mounted rocker arms on other engines and reinstalled them and never reset valve clearances. But I do plan on doing my Healey one of these days and i will check all my clearances before i remove the rockers then after they are reinstalled I will check them again. I believe I may only have to reset a few of them.

There was a special tool for the C series head (PN 18G545) which was very similar to those shown but are open ended. I don't think the ring (box?) end would clear the under side of the shaft to fit over the nut. The spanner size is 11/16 AF (7/16 UNF thread)


If so, anyone know the nut size off the top of their head?

Is this really necessary? To do this on a Big Healey you have to remove the rocker shaft, which is a PITA. Any idea if something like this would do the job:

Yep!, Absolutely necessary:

After replacing a head gasket or on a freshly rebuilt and run in engine.

So get out the torque wrench and a socket and get to it. OK!---LOL

I used to own the special tool for torqueing the head without removing the rocker gear. Problem was, it wouldnt do the nuts either side of the oil feed pipe, as there wasnt room
