TR4/4A Randy - how is your TR4 engine build coming along?

Pretty close to completion Tom - but not anywhere close to firing it up yet:

I am interested in how it does - haven't rebuilt an engine in about 30 years. Installed Larry Young's street cam, I'm a little worried as it is a higher lift cam than stock but there is no spring bind occurring. Also used Christian Marx's modified seal, the installation was very easy so if this doesn't leak I'll be quite happy. If anything, I suspect a lead around the rear mean as stuffing shellac coated felt material into the sealing areas was a messy pain.

Holdup now is going through the gearbox so I can get everything mounted on the frame - would love to get that done before the New Year.

Randy that looks just great!

Just curious, but what is on the front of the fan extension that is sticking out there in space?

Thanks Paul! Just an optical illusion there - that's just a 1/2 drive deep dish socket while I was checking the pulley mark for TDC.

I like that alternator too. What brand and amperage is that one?

Its just a cheap 45 amp 3-wire Denso style unit I hope works. Got it from DB Electrical, here's a link to an old post showing it next to a 10Si, and the weblink to the store:
Alternator discussion

I was able to mount it with zero modifications to brackets, etc. Only thing on the wish list is sourcing a suitable wide pulley for it in case I want to go with a stock belt.

Hi Randy

What is Christian Marx's modified seal?

If this is a rear seal, you can imagine my interest....

Randy, were you able to buy just the water pump and crank pulleys for the 1/2 " belt conversion, and if so is it a dampened crank pulley?
Thanks
Tom

Pat-

Unfortunately, I think you've machined your crankshaft, right? This seal is the new one Chris made that just modifies an orginal scroll to also have a lip seal - so no machining of the crankshaft. TRF is now selling it, I think through Joe Alexander. Here's a link to the install information Chris put together: New rear seal installation

Tom-

I was lucky a couple of years back and picked up the narrow kit on ebay for a good price. BPNorthwest I think sells the same kit, it is not dampened, and it unfortunately is a little pricey in my opinion.

You can get the two components separately, but I think you need to go outside the US. Bastuck in Germany is the original supplier, I believe Rimmer Bros at one time also carried the separate components.

Hi Randy

You are correct. I machined my crank already.
Bummer.
I do have another crank, if necessary. I'm just dreading the do-over on this repair. Costly and painful, after all the care I put into the first build.

Thanks for link.

Rnady ,Thanks.
Bastuck shows water pump and crank pulley for TR4a about $120us
+ shipping. Not sure if its it the same as TR3A.
I think 3 pulley kit from moss is abouth $280 for all three ,but dampened crank, but I dont neeed alternator pulley.I guess your using mechanical fan?
Thnaks for the info.
Tom.
BTW your motor looks great!

Tom-

Thanks for the compliment!

The pump and crank pulley are the same for the 3A and 4A. I think BPNorthwest carries the trio (including alternator pulley) for around $180-$190.

And yes, I'm using a mechanical fan but plan on putting in a switched pusher electric fan ahead of the radiator.

Randy the engine looks great, did you put that old set of pistons, and liners in that you got off ebay?

Don I love your modified seal. I wish I had the wit you guys have.

Keith-

I'm too much of a packrat, I couldn't bear to use the Powermax piston/liner set so they are saved for a future project.
