Possibly the most ignorant question ever posted.

When changing from a stock (and very dirty) air filter on a 1500, to a M@ss cute little foam/oblong thing, is it normal for the car to run EXTREMELY rich? I mean, gas on the plugs rich? I changed about a month ago( they ARE better looking than the stock filter/housings) and I've had a b**ch of a time getting everything back to normal. OTOH, I am now initmately familiar with rebuilding ZS single carbs. I should think it would run lean, but then I adjusted the needle after a couple, well a few, well more than a few beverages. Counter clockwise IS making it leaner, right?
thanks, George

you know Skip that is what I was thinking as well, more air lean, but I know next to nothing about adjusting a ZS carb.

Now if he had some SUs to make it sing, hehe.

Did you know SU stands for Skinners Union.

Putting a cleaner air filter on shouldn't make it richer, but you are correct that turning the adjuster counter clockwise makes it leaner. Welcome, by the way.

Hey George,

The conditions you describe sound like either a float level problem or a choke problem. Sadly, both are all too common with the ZS carb.

Have you recently installed a new electric fuel pump? This can cause the float bowls to over run if the pressure is too high. If not, I would start by eleminating the choke as a possibility. One way that you can do this is to remove the choke body, cover all the holes on the back of the choke body with masking tape, reinstall and take her for a test drive. If your rich condition disappears... BINGO!

Checking the float level requires removing the carb.

Check out these links, they are great articles on the ZS carb and choke.

Thank you, and it's great to find this place...no, it a stock fuel pump, floats set correctly, manual choke now installed...Timing, perhaps?

90% of carb related problems are electrical.
