Piston rings 100/6

Today I was cleaning the carbon off my pistons ready to reinstall them back with the old rings as the engine hasn't even run enough to bed them in, when one of the lower oil rings fell off the piston. It is broken in half and must have happened upon the original install as the broken ends are polished where they have been moving around. Engine is sleeved to standard with new pistons/rings 2000 miles ago before being parked up for 13 years.

1)Are there any recommended brands of rings to get? I'd prefer the multi-piece oil rings rather than the present single type.

2)What about rings from other applications? 1963 Jeep I4 has same dimensions and more modern materials

3)What is the general philosophy about removing/leaving the fifth ring below the gudgeon? Original pistons didn't have them and I haven't really understood why the replacement ones did.

Call up Total Seal piston rings (Flagstaf, AZ?) and give them the dimensions of your oil ring and they can supply just a set of low-tension oil control rings, if you like.

But, while you're at it, I strongly recommend that you ask them to supply you with a set of "Gapless" 2nd rings.

Based on their prices, you may elect to replace the entire set, they're not expensive, by comparison.

Hi Randy,

Thanks for the info. I tried their website and our local agent here, they both say TS don't do a 3 1/8" ring at all. Do you have a part number?
