Question: Last summer I had problems with my car cutting out at highway speeds and then not restarting for a few minutes. Eventually I realized that the coil was red hot and replaced it. After that the car ran fine but it had an infrequent backfire, which I thought was strange since I have a Pertronix installed on my MGB GT. This summer again, no problems except for the occassional backfire but it ran like a champ to east of Pittsburgh from the Cleveland area last weekend. On the way home, outside of Youngstown, it suddenly began sputtering and I lost power. I pulled over to the side of the road and it was running fine. The fuel pump was working but just in case I changed the filter. It ran fine for about 15 miles until it happened again. I let it sit and then took off for another 10 miles until the next incident. This time I checked the coil and it was red hot. Not wanting to change it on the side of the road, I got back in the car and turned on my auxillary fan. The car made the remaining 60 miles with the occassional hiccup but otherwise it was OK. What the heck is going on??? It's getting fuel to the Weber DGV so I don't think it's a fuel issue. Do I need to switch to a Pertronix coil? I've used a standard one with no problems until last year. Any thoughts, suggestions??? Thanks!
