Max Tire Size for 8" Wheels [how big is too big]

putting new tires on 15" x 8" wheels...how large a tire can a big healey 100-6 take w/o rubbing on the fenders or frame...my guess is 205 60 R15...and yes i found a pair of used daytons and bought adapters to size to my bolt pattern...thanks gang

215 60 15 is too big. This is what was on the rear of my car and there were rub marks. I replaced with 205 65 15 as they are taller than the 60 series.

Everything is relative to wheel back space. 8" wheels are pretty wide.

got 195/60/15 pirelli p6 up front and 205/60/15 on the back on my bn1 (early model) on 6" wires, no scraping, seems to depend a bit on the outer curvature on the tread pattern too, some i looked at were too square at the edge of the tread

You might find this online tool useful when trying to decide on tires. Ride height is not everything but the closer you stay to 26.00 " in diameter, the closer you are to the designed ground clearance, etc.

Thats what I started with Ed K, tried to stay as close to the original diameter as I could, ignored the rating specs, just took a tape along for the preliminary search!, had some advice along the way from the tyre people that buying the new you beaut hi performance tyres with all sorts of wondrous specs was just going to be a waste of bucks on a low tech suspension set up

Hi Ramajon,
I have 205’s that fit nicely on 6” wide rims. I would think an 8” rim would fit a tire with a minimum of 235, more like a 250. Too wide for a Healey without flaring the fenders. Check out Tire Rack, choose a tire and click on the specs. It will show you the preferred rims size for each tire.
