TR4/4A License plate on trunk lid

For those who have to display a plate on the rear of the car, and might worry about marring a new paint job, how did you mount the plate? I have only the two holes in the trunk lid for the bolts along the top of the license plate. I'd like to mount the plate without drilling more holes.

Perhaps there's a magic license plate holder out there which suspends the plate in midair 0.1" behind the trunk lid so that it never actually touches the car.

Put some rubber buffers in the lower holes of the license plate. Should be able to get them at Ace Hardware or equivalent.

I have always just used the two upper holes in the plate for attachment. I also have the luggage rack on those bolts.

I use a couple of plastic 'washers' that are about 3/16" thick - I think these were necessary with the luggage rack but they also move the plate away from the boot lid so I can fit a pair of dummy bolts (connected to nothing) in the lower plate holes.

They make nylon license plate bolts and nuts too, I would have to double check, but I think that is what I used.
