Spitfire Just Once in my Life, I'd Like to Drive a Spitfire

I fell in love with this car back in the mid-60s and don't know why I never owned one. I still have the old Road&Track magazines from that time with those wonderful Spitfire ads. I don't have room for another classic car but my bucket list includes driving a Mk1-3 Spitfire. If there is anyone along the Front Range of Colorado who could grant my wish, they can drive one of my classics ('72 Alfa GTV, '66 MGB, '69 Fiat 124 Spider)in exchange for this long overdue experience. I have owned two TR4As in the past but they are vastly different.

We have a very nice Mk1 in my area (cover car for latest Spitfire&GT6 club magazine), I know the owner would likely oblige you but Houston is probably a little beyond your range.. In the meantime, take a look at the latest Hemmings Sports and Exotics Car mag - really good content on the 50th anniversary of the Spitfire - it will hook you for sure!

Hey, SeldomSeen (21 posts in 5 1/2 years - boy did YOU pick the right screen name!)

While I don't have the magazines or ads, I was in exactly the same boat at the same time. A buddy had one when we were at LSU - brand new dark blue '69 model. We drove down to New Orleans a couple times in it - great fun. I never owned one, either, but also wanted a GT6 at the same time. Something about the lines of those cars...

I'm sure someone will take you up on your offer. Let us know.

Mickey

I was watching Wheeler Dealers last night, and they were doing up a Spitfire 1500. If you've ever watched the show, you know the the The guy who does all the repair work, Ed China, is very tall. Well, I rolled on the floor watching him drive the Spit.

Action starts at the 30 second mark if you want to advance the video...

Saw that as well, Art. I know he's tall, but I'm guessing he was sitting on more than just the driver's seat!

Dan: My purist, historically correct mind cannot possibly conceive of a punishment cruel and unusual enough for those who turn their classics into such abominations but that's just me.

Getting back to Spitfires and away from engine swaps, I have owned Sprites, MGBs, a Healey 100, a TR4a, a the present TR250, though my future wants generally go to more exotic stuff like XKEs, GTVs, and SP250s, I would like to own a nice Spitfire to round out my "popular british sports car" experience, and because I think they are pretty cool. Used to sort of dismiss them as a hardcore Sprite guy, but I would really like a nice late 60s spit at some time in the foreseeable future.

Besides it would be a cool compliment to the TR250, maybe I should shoot for a '68 Spit and a '68 GT6, the complete 68 Triumph US sports car line...dare to dream.

You could even add a very late TR4A to that, as they were still price listed by S-T USA into calendar year 1968!
