Engine hoist--buy or rent

I've got at least 3 engine remove or install operations to do in the next year or so. 1275 out of donor, 948 out of Bugeye, 1275 into Bugeye. Can't be done all at the same time, since I'm hoping to pull the 1275 this month, and wouldn't be installing it into the Tunebug until next summer, probably.

So I'm looking at 2 - 3 rentals, or just going out and buying one. Of course, then you have to store it, but that is usually workable somehow. Harbor Freight always has a few on sale, it seems.

Thoughts? These things worth having around?

My tool philosophy:

Need a tool once? Borrow it.

Need a tool twice? Rent it.

Need a tool three times? Buy it.

And if you need a tool badly enough to buy it, buy a good one.

Drew, at that price it's cheaper to buy than rent. I have one that looks identical to that, and it's served me well over the last 8 years or so. The only thing I've done to make it more user friendly was to install a swivel where the lift chain hooks up, and replace all the Chinese bolts with better quality fasteners.
I would also suggest something along the lines of an Oberg tilt attachment.

I've got one and its great for when you need it, and the rest of the time it has to hide somewhere out of the way.

One point is its capacity:

If you'll have to use it at full extension it won't lift so much. Ask yourself how much you'll need to lift and how far out you'll need the boom for that.

1/4 ton @ 50-1/4" wouldn't cope with a Big Healey's needs very well, but for a Little Healey you'd probably be OK...

My son bought one and paid around $300 for it. Has to have top shelf equipment?? I bought one from a farm equipment supplier around here for $150 and except for the color, it's the same exact thing. The hyd. jack has the same part number stamped on it! Same capasity with folding legs. Go figure! I like mine better, it's blue. Used one just like Harbor Freight (except it was from Sam's Club) Pulled two E-Type motors, a Mustang and numerous 1275s. Had it six years and it's still going strong!!

I got the same thing at Pep Boys, they have the same one as harbor freight (only it is red) for $10 bucks less w/rebate!!
