E Brake cross rods

I need to either make or modify the e brake cross rods that run from the lever/balancer mounted on the rear axle housing to the lever at the backing plate. The reason is that I had to modify the location of the lever/balancer due to using a Austin Healey 3000 rear end on a Daimler SP250. My questions are: can I cut and re-weld my AH cross rods? Or can I just buy some rod material (stainless?) and make completely new rods the correct length? I believe the original rods are tempered or heat treated in some way and I don't know if welding will compromise or change the integrity or if raw SS rod is strong enough. Thank, Josh

What is the diameter of the rod? Titanium?

I really doubt they're high-tensile or anything like that. Their main load is in tension, and something like 1/4" or 5/16" mild steel in tension can easily cope with anything you can do with a handbrake, even if Godzilla pulls it!

Thanks for the replies. I found some help at a local,race shop. They are shortening and lengh ending as I need using Chromoly. They say is will be stronger than the original forged steel.
