Correct Jack for BJ8?

From this description, is this the correct jack for a BJ8?

This is the red/orange cone type and has a heavy cast base. The casting # below "SHELLEY" is LJ225. On the opposite side of the base at the top is CA265,just below is BH ,then vertically is PROV PAT. Fully down it's about 5-1/2 inches high.

And except for the concours judging, it is a worthless piece of junk. Never trust your car on it. Get a scissor jack.

Sorry to say, that the pictured jack is NOT correct for any Healey. It's close, but the place where the handle inserts is wrong for a Healey. The ones that came in Healeys have a horizontal socket where the handle inserts straight in, level. I've seen the kind you have, primarily at autojumbles in the UK, and I'm not sure exactly which cars had those as original equipment, but they weren't Healeys. Sorry.

I'm not intending to use it to jack the car up, only as eye candy for my trunk.

If the jack is like the one SHG has pictured, it would not be correct, I'm assuming.

Reid, from the description can you tell if the described jack is correct? If so and the jack is in reasonably good condition without the tommy bar, is it worth $150 to dress up my trunk?

First check your number "CA265 BH" Make certain that you did not read them wrong. If they are GA285 BH it may be correct at least up to the Phase II BJ8 . However, It will not look like the jack SHG has shown above.---Fwiw---Keoke

Yes, it sounds correct, but there are still two variations. On top there will be either CA259 or CA311 cast in raised letters. CA259 is the earlier version and is rare, especially in good condition (they are usualy found with cracked/broken off metal where the handle inserts). The CA311 version has a reinforced handle socket, and is correct for the majority of BJ8s.

$150 is a reasonable price for one in good condition. If you end up having to paint it, it's still worth $150, and use "Chinese Red" - a very organish red.

I thought it was the other one with the handle facing upward. Too bad, that's the better of the two. Much heavier weight. Guess it goes to eBay and I keep the other one.

Yes, that's the one. The photo is a little bit small to see details, but it looks like the earlier version (CA259). The color looks a little too orange-ish/not-red-enough, but maybe it's the flash.

By the way, the handle - a simple 18-inch long rod of 1/2-inch diameter - was unpainted. They were cad-plated and so didn't rust (unless the plating was worn off somehow).

Note that he doesn't show the more common version for the BJ8s with the reinforced handle socket. Both photos on his website are of the earlier, more rare variant.

(The "droop-nose" Shelley jacks shown there are not correct for any Healey.)

Yep again, there is one just like it with a stiffening web molded on top. Trying to get application data from my British contact in the UK. However, the web was put in the wrong place and they still break out on the bottom side.- /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cryin.gif

Now you've got a lot of info on these jacks, ER, and I know it didn't come from Anderson Moment or Clausager, so give up your sources, Mr. Editor. There's no first amendment when it comes to knowing jack.

Well, in all modesty, I am the source. I've been collecting and studying and observing and photographing and researching and comparing the tool kit items for Healeys for a long time. I'm the author of the section of the Concours Guidelines on the tools and jacks, and I've written articles for the club magazines that were published many years ago.

Guess you could say that I'm a PhD in Superslim, and wrote my dissertation on Shelley and King Dick.

(I really don't want to come across the wrong way, but it's just a fact that when you study something as long as I have, you're bound to learn something, even when you're as dense as I am!)

Having spent the winter playing with the jacks and tool kits, not to mention my Heuer Rally timer collection that has essentially financed this folly for me, I've come across a lot of stuff but not a lot of info.

My friends in UK have been arguing which of the jacks, both marked LJ225 CA265, are right for a BJ8. Some one, some the other, some say either. What do I know?

I have both of the jacks. Frankly, the drop nose is a much heavier duty jack than the straight nose. The screw is about twice the diameter, though the rod is about half. Not that I'd use either, but for show purposes.

I've also put together a tool kit by scavenging items from around the world at pennies. I've included all the right stuff from the supplemental tool kit (except a tommy bar as yet), plus a few additional pieces that I just happened to like.

I don't know who is right, but I will happily defer to Reid, as I'm absolutely sure he knows more than me. So I plan to sell one of the jacks on ebay to pay for the other. Now I know which one to sell. Please understand that my old driver isn't winning any concours events, and I never plan to have it that shiney that I can't drive it whenever I want. But I still like to turn a few heads and bring a trophy home so my son can put it on the wall.
