Correct color for Bugeye disk wheels??

I have searched the forum for an answer to this question (Thanks Basil for your sticky about thread titles) and have not found an answer. Has anyone identified a close to correct paint color for early Sprite disk wheels. I know Moss sells cans for about $15, but that seems a little steep. I am looking for a krylon or some other over the counter solution to this issue.

Discount tire has 155/80/R13 Kumho tires on sale for $20 each. I just dropped off 5 rims with a local sand blaster, and wanted to get some paint to make them look all nice before I take them into Discount to get all scratched up.

There's a discussion of this over in the Triumph forum. Several possibilities are offered. Click on the Eastwood link given in one of the posts. That color is supposed to be what the Brits used for their wheels, and it's a bit cheaper then Moss. Someone also gives a Rust-O-Leum paint that's close.

When I get to them, I am planning on using Awlgrip metallic silver yacht paint, sprayed on. I think it is quite close and has the durability of a two-part epoxy which should work really well on wheels! (My plan is to also do the body with the same paint-but red!)

Thanks for the link Art. I still have a wheel or two with what looks like original paint to compare. I will try to post my results here when I am finished.

Rustoleum Matte Nickel is very close, available almost anywhere and about $5 a can.

The Moss paint only took one can to do 5 wheels.

Paint the outsides first so you can use the rustoleum on the inside.

Prep well and get primer real smooth so you don't use excessive paint.

Hi There,

I`ve used the Moss paint on many a wheel & all I can say is; Its 1st. Class Quality paint. Yep; Its pricey but as Jack mentions above, a bit of prep work & some of Moss paint; You virtually have new rims.

I've used rustoleum's high temp silver with good results. The thing about these cars is that there wasn't a right color. They bought paint in lots and as one ran out, it was mixed with the next to blend and use every bit of paint.
