Advice from peanut gallery sought.

I was hoping at least one of you well seasoned peanuts could give me a little construction advice.

I'm at a stage in the restoration where I'm still waiting on some stuff and still waiting until I can afford some other stuff, but I'd like to install the rear axle assembly without having installed the limited slip differential. The pinion is set, as are all the seals, etc., so all I really need to do is insert and install the LSD when I get one. Since the frame doesn't have a body on it yet, I figured the frame could act like a holder of sorts for the axle while I install the LSD.

If worse comes to worse, I guess I could take it all apart again, but I really want to get the rear end back together.

I await the advice of the seasoned peanuts!

The LSD includes a different carrier, right? That means picking shims & so on for the new carrier, which is not something I would want to do on the frame, even without the body in the way. My back pretty much insists that I do that kind of work standing up straight.

Still, no harm in doing a trial assembly, if you can't find anything better to do.

Off-topic, the wife wants to see Mardi Gras next year. Any tips on what to do & see (or not do & see) ?

Yea, I think it will be easier on a bench too.

Mardi Gras...jeesh, that's a whole other can of worms. I'm really not a carnival type guy though so you may be asking the wrong person. I quit going to the parades and such years ago. It's mainly a tourist thing now, but as you would be tourists, it is definitely worth seeing at least once. If you like depravity and debauchery at it's most elemental level, watch it from the French Quarter. Beware though, the rating here is definitely XXX. If you're looking for a more family oriented type experience, watch it from St. Charles Avenue. Of course, "Mardi Gras" is celebrated down here for several weeks. We basically start the carnival season off around the middle of December and it runs through to "Fat Tuesday" or Mardi Gras if you're of the French persuasion. Much of the season remains unseen by most as it consists of a great many formal balls, debutante parties and the like. Extremely boring and tedious affairs. So...I would suggest coming down maybe the weekend before Fat Tuesday, take in a few parades, eat some great food and maybe do some sightseeing. Don't miss some of the larger night parades such as Bacchus and Endymion. They are really astounding. For Mardi Gras day, find a spot on St. Charles, near the corner of Louisiana Ave. would be a good spot, and just take the day in. Careful on beverage consumption though because, "There ain't no place to pee on Mardi Gras day!".

The Episcopal Church on St. Charles near Napoleon offers free bathrooms for revelers (a tip jar is located nearby) and inexpensive meals. Well worth it. I agree with Tab, avoid the Quarter, unless it is your first time. Wear combat boots and keep your wallet in your front pocket. Don't be shocked by what you or your wife might see. Everyone needs to experience The Gras once in their life. My son and his large group of friends go more to Faubourg Marigny in the Frenchmen Street area to avoid the zoo in The Quarter. You can catch all the beads you can carry on St. Charles Ave. My wife is a pro at bead catching. Most floats will throw whole bags-full. "Throw me something, mister." Hotels tend to be booked already (although the economy might alter that a bit) but be prepared to pay. Most double their rates and have a three day minimum stay for Mardi Gras weekend. Drinking in public is legal in New Orleans, no glass containers though. Whatever you do, don't pet the NOPD crowd control horses. You WILL spend the night in Central Lockup. Ask me how I know.

Enjoy.

Bill, are you sure that was a horse you were petting? Positive ID on some NOPD police"women" vs. the thoroughbreds can be tough sometimes.

We are going to the Mobile Mardi Gras this year, little leery still of NO since the big storm. Mobile is little safer and cleaner. If you do go to NO, I found that its easier to take an old pair of shoes to wear and then throw them away when you leave. Can't get the smell out of them.

Have fun!
