Hi.
I have that the transmission in my car together with the driveshaft both turn but the differential does nothing. the driveshaft turns on the mouth of the differential but the diff. doesn't do anything.
is the differential completely shot?
or would there be anything else that could cause this?
what should I do?

thank you very much as always.

sounds like the diff is busted, maybe an axle.

Well, let me say that they are a direct connection!! If you have the driveshaft turning, going into the diff, then there is a definite problem inside!! GOOD LUCK!! What year?? and what city??

Hi.
it's a 1977 and Richmond, Ca.
so a broken axel would keep "both" wheels from turning or engaging? eventhough the driveshaft is connected to the diff. & turning & everything.
... I'm still gonna check but I'm wondering...
is it normal that I can put it into any gear without having to press on the clutch?
thanks lots.
Felipe.

I'd suspect the differential before I'd suspect that one of the axles snapped. But that's only because I've had a differential shred itself on a '79 Midget before. I seem to remember that the axle shafts are pretty stout. But I guess they could be prone to snap as well... Let us know what the culprit is.

to remove the diff. do I need to take the big bolt(1" I think)that's inside of where the driveshaft and diff. join.
I took off every bolt (I think 7)from the diff. but it doesn't come out, it "wiggles" but doesn't come out.
another thing is that, now that the diff. is loose, I can pry a section of it with a screw driver (like if one was prying it to remove it)if I keep pressure on it and turn either of the wheels the diff. turns but this is only when I put this pressure and kind of tilt it I guess. Anyways the point is that I think the axels might not be broken since they are reaching the diff. and turning it.?so I think is the diff. that's bad.
I'm I right on this assumption?
thank youuu.
Felipe.

aeronca was right...
it was the axel, rear right. broken, twisted u name it.
the other parts look ok. I had to push the broken piece out through the opposite opening with a thin screw driver to not damage the teeth in the the diff.
so anyways now to search for an inexpensive axel...
any ideas??

thanks again for the help.and I will soon be in touch with the "next one"...
