5 Speed Driveshaft Yoke

Steve -

Both of the splines measure 1.495 " OD the entire length of the yoke. The tech at PTI noted that the Spicer yoke that came with the kit is a 20 on 21 spline. One spline is cut down. The spline that fits is spec'd as an involute 21 spline.

Do you know if your driveshaft is 2" or 2.5" diameter? Did you use the 2303-21 yoke?

I found a local high performance shop that specializes in Japanese vehicles. They race a Toyota Supra. Going down there this morning.

Will look forward to hearing how it turns out.

Sorry can't answer questions about part numbers or diameter of shaft. Probably a 2"-er.

A driveshaft guy made it up for me and it just fit. Lucky me, I guess.

Pete Delaney does exist! He called me this morning, but we were both on the road. He gave me some suggestions, and I will try his ideas. He is also going to talk to his driveshaft builder to gather additional information. I will follow up once I complete Pete's suggestions and have my sit down with the drive train guru at the local performance shop. They are a first class shop. A service area filled with Datsun's (one Fairlady), Toyota's, Honda's, Mazda's etc. Mostly older models. A couple of SCCA race cars. The drivetrain technician was out today. He has over 27 years of gearbox experience. The owner and the counter guy knew just about everything concerning Toyota W-xx Series transmissions.

One odd thing I found out when I was having problems with my Toyota transmission sliding out
of 5th gear was that there were no part numbers on a lot of stuff so the shop that repaired the transmission had to match the parts with parts they had in stock.

UPDATE: I am officially 5 speeding! The Gearbox Guru from the race shop stopped by my shop last Saturday (Okay, I enticed him with a six-pack). He looked over the situation and agreed that the Delaney Spicer slip yoke is the proper yoke for Toyota W-xx Series transmissions. He thinks that the second transmission, now installed in the Healey, could be a W Series, but not a 58. No way of really telling what it is without doing a detailed exam and gear ratio test.

He took some measurements and took the other Toyota splined yoke that I had (Toyota 1-2303-21) and said he would have his driveshaft guy build me a driveshaft that would work. Picked up the new driveshaft this morning. All is good.

He also took with him the first transmission that would jump out of fifth gear. He said that the transmission was never "rebuilt" as the seller claimed. At best, someone changed the oil seals. The fifth gear slider is junked and the entire fifth gear assembly is pretty much scrap. He wants to finish the rebuild and put it through its paces in his test jig. Then I will decide if I want to swap out the transmissions.

John,
If you decide you want to do a 'science project' to see which transmission(s) you have, on the bench:

-- Print out the Wikipedia article "Toyota W-series transmissions" - it has all the ratios
-- get yourself a piece of art for a circle divided into percentages, print out a copy for the front of the trans and the output end
-- IIRC the reverse gears are most unique (refer to article); Supra 5th is .78 (128%) the rest are around .85 (118%). You get the percents by dividing 1.0 by the ratio (i.e.1.0/.78 = 1.28)
-- if you have the shift lever off, the shift pattern is a mirror image, i.e. reverse is all the way to the left and forward; 5th is left and rearward
-- put the percent wheels on front and back of trans
-- If you have the Supra (W58 IIRC), with it in 5th, rotate the input shaft one full turn and you'll observe the output has gone past one full turn to the 28% point
-- If reverse is, say, 3.5 then you'd see the output shaft move approximately 29% in the other direction.
