1931? Model A Coupe

While I was on a business trip to San Diego, I drove out to the big Fry's electronics store there (talk about a kid in a candy store!). On my way out, walking through the parking lot to my car, I spotted this.

Say, did you notice if the roof could be "opened" somehow? Looks like canvas or some other material on the top.

No, didn't notice, but then didn't really look at it that closely.

Ford didn't go to an all steel roof until the '37 model year. GM came out first with the all steel "Turret Top" in '35. Up till then automobile roofs were open and then canvas covered...but they didn't remove or fold back.

I am glad you are having fun in my hometown. The one and only time my wife and I visited frys we couldn't get anyone to check us out. After we waited for ever to be waited on we just left our cart full of the stuff we were going to buy and walked out never been back since.

Yup. Except for trucks - the Model A pickup used all steel starting in 1930.

I've read that the technology wasn't there. While the steel rolling machines were huge, the steel rolls they produced weren't very wide. Same goes for stamping machines - while they were two stories tall, even a Model T's simple fender was welded up of two pieces of steel (it took till the mid/late thirties for one piece stamped fenders).

Lovely! And I presume you mean the car and not the woman framed in the front window?

I restored one of those models, a 30, but it was Burgundy and black fenders. PJ
