Aye, it all depends on how much the insurance company says the car is worth vs what it's going to cost to have the work done. The paint wasn't bad at all, wasn't great, but it was well above average for original paint with only a few spots, as you mention the roof and a few parts of the hood with visible swirls from being over buffed. No idea what the insurance co is going to say its' worth before they want to total it, since the TR7 is not insured with classic car insurance, but on the same Liberty Mutual plan that my Tacoma is insured under.
In fact they were so clueless that they had called me to go over the total loss procedure with me, because they had thought that my TR7 was a trailer, not a car, because they tried to run the 'VIN' number through their automatic value generation software, and it choked on the commission number and said it was a trailer... I had to correct them that no, it's not a trailer, it's a British sports car, and yes i do want an assessor out to take a look at it...
