Sunday a week ago, I began treatment of my face and scalp for pre-cancer. I've had several spots frozen/cut off over the years, thanks to my super-fair skin. The dermatologist suggested I do the two-week treatment which consists of applying cream all over my face and scalp. The stuff "seeks and destroys" cancer cells lurking under the skin - cells that most likely will eventually come to the surface as basal cell or squamous cell carcinoma.

First few days were uneventful, but over the weekend, it really started working. The strange thing is that I really expected it to have a wonderful time on my scalp - but not much activity there. However, my face looks like a combination road rash/sunburn victim! Doesn't hurt all that bad, but sure LOOKS like heck! I'm not much on calling attention to myself (except here! ), so I stayed home yesterday. Got another week to go with the treatment, and then up to a couple weeks of scabbing over (EEWWWWW!) - after that, hopefully won't have any surprises popping up later.

Has anyone else done this? Results?

Mickey

Mickey,
I use Carac cream from time to time on the advice of my dermatologist. I have only had a really bad look from it once, and subsequent treatments have been much less noticeable. I was lucky that during my first treatment I was to perform with a chorus in Schoenberg's "A Survivor from Warsaw, OP 46" with the Allentown Symphony, a the director decided we should do it in costume and character, so my skin's appearance was actually a benefit. It is all in the timing.

One of my co-workers just had that chemical treatment done (the Dermatologist is one the floor above my office). His face looked like he got a little too close to a blow torch. It seemed to work well for him and after a few weeks it began to fade and now there is no evidence of his treatment.

Yep - timing. With this stuff (fluorouracil), you're not supposed to be exposed to the sun, so winter's the best time. And again, it looks worse than it feels. The biggest inconvenience is explaining to everyone that Janet really didn't take an egg beater to my face!

Yea Mickey we realy know how you are with Janet!!

I which I could due something like that than get cut open for Prostate Cancer.

Don

Sorry about the discomfort, Mickey, and glad the big C is gone.

I, too, have very fair skin, probably inherited from my red-haired Scot ancestors.

For about the past 10 years I've used sunblock lotions and zinc oxide like they were going out of style. At the beach, folks actually make fun of me for looking like a ghost with all the sunscreen on.

But, skin cancer is no joke, especially for we overly-white, over-50ish folks.

Best of luck to you Mickey, and get some suncreen! :yesnod:

NO, Don, you do NOT want to put this cream "down there"!

You'd be off your bike for a LOOONGGG time!

Hi Mickey,

We have had several losses from cancer in our family. Last week my youngest daughter had biopsies taken, thankfully they were negative.

So, Praise the Lord and apply the cream. What a wonderful opportunity to bear witness and maybe give someone else the needed courage to do the same.

Thanks, Tom and Mark. Gratefully, the cancers I've had have been the lesser ones. And I've never been able to tolerate too much sun - always burned pretty quickly.

Wide-brimmed hat and sunscreen for me!

Mick, praying for you...

Thanks, Tony, but it's really preventive maintenance at this point - thankfully!

Doesn't hurt though, does it?

Feels like sunburn. Not bad, really.

Mickey;

Despite your objections, we'll do for you, what you would do for all of us, PRAY!
It's payback time and no one here deserves it more.

Mickey, have you read "The Shack" yet?

Yep - thought I'd told you about that already...

Good book - though when I started it, I didn't think so.

So, send me a PM about your thoughts....
