Which Battery?

Everything should be tight. If a cable comes off, the car won't run. There is plenty of room left to tighten by the looks of it. Get a wrench on there and make it tighter!

As for the positive not going on, loosen the bolt and then spread the clamp open wider with a big screwdriver. If you can't spread it far enough and still allow the bolt to go through, the hole will need to be slightly enlarged. I have a reamer for that you can borrow, or swing it by and I'll do it for you.

PS... I hope you bought those jack stands we were talking about. Don't make me tell these guys you were going to get under the car with not only just a jack holding it up, but the flimsy factory jack!
 
No, you'll just have an open circuit. They used to sell battery terminal spreaders at jobbers. Looks like pliers, it spreads those connectors so they will fit completly on the posts.

& corrosion wuill build up quicker causing you to have starting problems...tighten all the connections!

Just picked this one up for $50. All original. The jack we used was one of those big arse ones that you see in auto shops.

Now the negative is nice and tight. The positive is still not all the way down but it's tight. I'm a happy camper.

Now find a way to get an extra inch of length from the positive cable, so the connector car rotate a little farther and go the rest of the way down!

Don't just forget about it, that's how DPOs are born. :wink:

I have been watching this battery thread for some time and now I need one. The group 26 has been hard to come by in my local junk yard and I was thinking of upgrading. I saw the discussion on the AGM Miata battery too. Went to the parts store today and noticed they now carry a Deka Ultimate 8yr battery. It says it's new technology AG* as in Silver plate design. 600 CCA, 3yr free replacment at an attractive price. Closest it comes in is a group 35. measurments seem like they would work in a CB MGB. I never see group 35 mentioned. Will this battery fit? Anyone know if this is the same type as the Westco Miata battery? It just says AG, not AGM but looks like they stand behind it. I don't really like Deka but this one is new. Any thoughts?? Thanks
 
Not sure about the fit, but if you aren't comfortable with a brand then that's enough reason to stay away, in my opinion. I have no experience with, or knowledge of Deka batteries.
 
Deka is actually a big maker of aftermarket batteries.
And they make batteries for many other applications (electric wheelchairs, marine useage, motorcycles, ATVs, etc.)

They have a full line of true AGM (Absorption Glass Mat) batteries.
Many of their products are sold under a supplier (or "house") branded lable as well as the "Deka" brand.

~Here~ is an example of Deka AGM auto batteries.

They are made in Pennsylvania, not too far from me. It's my understanding that they are a decent product.

I would probably never buy a battery from a junkyard, unless they were almost free.

Deka aka East Penn Manufacturing is indeed a high quality battery OEM. They bought Douglas Battery a few years ago who made most of the OEM batteries for BMW's supplied from Spartanburg. I live about 10 miles from their main plant in PA.

When I had more time, I used to buy blems for about $15ea from the nearby outlet. The WestCo is much more convenient. It just works.

I'm with Paul on this one. After many hours of reading on the web I ended up buying an Odyssey https://www.odysseybatteries.com/. Even sprung for the billet hold down. Its a dry cell so the terminals won't corrode, and pretty light and compact for the power rating. Don't remember the details at the moment, but there are different ways of measuring output and value besides std CCA. Though the CCA might not measure that high they have some other properties that are advantageous in the way they discharge. Another thing - they retain their charge very well if you don't drive your car that often. But they certainly don't look very traditional if that is important to you. I bought the 680 - 220 CCA, weighs about 15 - 16 lbs and very compact.
