What is this called?

the left front does the same on mine. but I could swear all the other brake, fuel, and clutch lines are running in front of the heater box on my car.

Probably changed for the '77 model year... seems there were a lot of them... Dash, gauges, seats, console, boosted brakes w/re-routed lines, twin electric radiator fans, forward mounted radiator, swaybars front and rear, and probably more than that. Mine was built 12/76 BTW too. Wouldn't that make it one of the first 77's?

My '79 has them over the top

My 78 dosn't have them over the heater box.

The brake lines were moved to over the top of the heater in '76. So, all after that should have them over the top.

Look on page 66 of Clausinger for photos of a '77 car with them over the top.

Here's a pic of my 78's engine bay.

No lines over the heater box. Could this be one of those "varibles" often talked about from the production line?

Hey Tony, Just noticed on Bret's photo, the brahe booster line and airpump line are run the same as on mine (RE: carboard thingy) maybe this was another late production line variable?
Cheers Ric

Guys, look up under the lip of the body - they run behind the hood hinges.

Nice clean engine room, I'm impressed.

Hi Tony, have wandered out and re-checked, no hyd lines over heater, they are run along lip below and in front of heater, my vac/air pump lines are the same as Brets. Glad that I don't want a show car. But still very interesting the number of variations, and how some are the same as others.
Cheers Ric

Yet another, Hi Tony.
Could not believe you were mistaken, so wandered out and had another look.
Very sorry, you are quite correct. I was looking at the clutch line and fuel line, indeed the brake line runs just where you described.
Hanging head, whilst giving it a good slap.
Cheers Ric

Yeah, I was just about to send you back out there myself... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif They are quite hidden unless you bend over. I actually started at the master cylinder on mine earlier and traced them.

LOL How many of us went and looked for that little heat shield??? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

After seeing the pics of other engine compartments here, I would be embarrassed to take a pic of mine, but it is there in my '74B with the clutch line and brake lines sort of behind it. Can anyone post a good pic of this area? I'd like to know what color it is supposed to be, as mine looks like it was black at some point, but, like a lot of things in my car, it has orange (blaze) paint sort of covering it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Bruce - its supposed to be black.

Here's a photo of my 73 showing the area you are interested in. My little heatshield was primarily rust color /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif, so after glassbeading it, I painted it hitemp silver. If it were not such a PITA to get off, I'd probably remove it and paint it black now that Tony told me it should be. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif

The black parts (valve cover, pedal box/cover, heater/ tubing, air cleaners) were powder coated about 6 years ago. I just hose it down to remove the dust/oil and apply a new coat of wax. Powder is tough as nails.

Here's my promised 1977 brakeline routing picture...

Yes it's absolutely filthy in there /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Okay, first off, the ONLY reason Binabox's engine bay is clean is because she's not been driven. Give me a few months! Here's Emma's, when I was changing the water pump. She's DIRTY!

& Emma's brake lines run OVER the heater! I can see them in the photo.

Brett - if they aren't up there, they've been changed by a PO because that wasn't one of the variances - you've got power assisted brakes...they come out the MC & follow the fender until they cross over the heater (up behind the lip of the body behind the hinges) just like in Kenny's photo.
