TR6 TR6 dash support in a TR4?

Hi,
Does anyone know if a dash support from a TR6 will fit a TR4?
Looking at schematics in Moss Motors etc, looks like a U shaped bracket ("filler bracket") may be required and possibly I could fabricate that.
Any thoughts?
Thanks,

Jim

TR6 dash support (with the radio hole it, heater controls, etc) fits TR4A. I have one in mine, because I didn't want to cut a big ole hole in my original to put a modern radio into, so I got one from a TR6. TR4 might be different, I don't know for sure.

Thanks for the input guys. And it is a 4, not a 4A.
Dan - how did you connect the dash support to the dash itself?
The 4/4A has that radio fascia/bracket that has a right-angled lip on it so you can bolt that directly to the underside of the metal dash.
The 6 support has its mounting holes in the vertical face at the top of the support and therefore requires (I think from looking at Moss Motors schematics...) another slimmer, U-shaped channel/bracket which the support bolts into and it in turn bolts to the underside of the metal dash...I think!
Does that make sense and did you have to fit the channel/bracket piece? Moss and TRF ("dash filler bracket") say it’s no longer available from there but I’m thinking I may be able to make one.
Anyway, can you let me know?
Many thanks.

Jim.

I have one of each, I will try to take a look at the attachment points later tonight, but don't have access two 4 and a 6 to compare dashes.

The good news, the "feet" that straddle the tunnel and attach to the floor are in the exact same location.

the top part on TR4 dash support does not go up as high,as you stated they attach differently at the top, so some adjustment or fabrication of parts will be needed

Then there must be some kind of bracket for the TR6 that was not on the support I used. It attaches exactly the same, top and bottom, as the TR4A bracket. Bolts go through from the front on top.

I need to look at my Spare Parts Manual to be certain but I believe there is an L shaped bracket that is attached to the metal dash panel that the dash support then attaches to on a 4A. I'll look tonight when I get home.

I see what you are talking about Jerry. On the TR6 it is a similar bracket, although U shaped instead of just L. So, the TR6 and TR4A supports ARE interchangeable.
Also in Jerry's link we can see that the TR4 support is a little different.

Thanks for all this guys.
So, the u-shaped TR6 bracket and the L-shaped 4A bracket don't seem to be available anywhere.
I'm thinking I can probably make something from a piece of ally L or channel.
Apart from the obvious of making sure the holes line up! can anyone see any problems in doing that?

glemon - Does the overall height of the 6 support seem the same as total height of the 4/4A support + radio fascia/bracket piece?

Again, many thanks.

I am afraid I don't know, I have the TR4 dash support, which is shorter than the 4a-6 item, but not the accompanying pieces that go with it. I would think the 4 dash structure would be the same as the later cars, so they should matc up pretty well, but don't have a TR4, just some old bits of one, so can't say for sure.

As to the first question, yes, it looks like a matter of finding an appropriate piece of metal, cutting and drilling some holes, but would be easier to assess with all the necessary parts present.

Call Scott Harper at team triumph in Warren Ohio 330-392-7176. Call after 11 AM. He may have that piece. Ask him to look at the Moss picture as a reference.
Good guy with lots of stuff.

Can't answer any of the questions but am left wondering -- why would someone want to do this?

Is it to get that extension for the shifter?

Doesn't the 4A/6 take a different shift lever than the 4 and is this part also required to use the later dash support?

4 4A and 6 all have the same lever so the support should work fine but like you I wonder why someone would want to do this.

So Scott at Team Triumph knew what I was talking about and has one he's mailing to me. Thanks for the contact.
As to why I want to do this, see DanB's message above.
Thanks all.

Moss lists different levers for the 4 & 4A though I have no idea if this is correct or what the differences might be:

848-230 and 848-240.

I can see the reluctance to punch a radio hole in original part, but on a TR4 this is just the bracket that connects the support and the dash -- which is available:

TR4 Dash Bracket

Seems like it would be simpler and possibly cheaper to just get that replacement piece and make a radio hole in it.

You can also use the dogbone pieces (or whatever you call them) from the TR6 to mount speakers on either side of the radio. That is another reason to do it.
