Has anyone done this? The later radiator is wider than the frame rails but it looks like it would fit in front of the rails.

I was under the impression that the Tr3,4and 4A used the same rad, only difference being the the long neck on the 3. I cant see why a 4A rad wouldn't work in a 4.
 
Early tr4's HAD the tr3 radiator with the long neck but lacked the hole sometimes for the crank.Later the neck got shorter and by the 64 the neck was gone. Just make sure that when you are doing this job that you uprate the fan.My favorite is the tr7 13 blade.Just cut the old paddles off and trim the hub to fit the 7 part, drill and use.

The TR4A radiator is different and wider as Jerry indicates with wider lower mounts and different upper mounts.

The TR4 had at least 2 radiators (although the SPC lists 3 part numbers). The early one had the extension like the TR3 (up to CT9552) while the later one did not.

If anyone has used the later radiator, I am trying to see how they fit it into the car. Why would you use the later one? because it has more surface area for cooling.

Jerry- My impression was it would not fit, I think the frame rails on a 4 are narrower than a 4A since the 4 basically started with a modified 3 frame so the inner rails are TR3 dimensioned. On the 4A I don't think that is the case, I expect you'd have about 3" more clearance.
 
Well, we may have a brand new radiator that you can get with free shipping then. I have a feeling it just is not going to be worth it to fit. We did want the extra cooling from the larger size but maybe that won't work. Some more measuring on Friday. Jerry

Let us know what you find! If you do find a way to mount it (forward you were saying?), you'll need so custom radiator hoses right? If you do mount it in front of the rails won't that move it beyond the radiator shield as well?

My friend decided he wanted the larger radiator. His car overheated with the TR3 type. So we trimmed the inner frame rails and then welded back in plates for strength. The view fromt he front looks the same as before, if you did not know it came with the other radiator, you could not tell. There is plenty of frame up there at the front end. This way the radiator fits and needs no longer hoses or adjustments to the fan. We are looking for a better fan than stock, any ideas?

Sounds like a very clever and tidy solution. For fan, the yellow 8 blade TR6 fan with a shorter TR3 fan extension works well, thats what I have. They went out of stock about a year ago but I thought someone was back making them again. Ebay has them quite frequently.

Several parts suppliers list a blue plastic 8 blade fan now, it's probably the same part other than the color.
 
Could you point me in one of those manufacturers direction? I have looked at VB, MOSS, BPN, and TRF and don't see one.

Rimmers looks a little cheaper than VB: https://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/Item--i-GRID006544 - still unfortunately much pricier than they used to be. If you have the older square style 4 blade metal fan I would recommend doing something else - those have been known to lose blades over time. And they don't pull worth a darn either.
