TR Frame Data Plates?

There's a data plate about the size of one of the brass body number plates welded on the top of the front-most cross-piece of my TR3A. It looks like it has at least one number (a "3") stamped on it. Can anyone shed light on this?
Thanks,
John

For all my muscle car friends I show them mine (Z28). No idea what it means.

John,

The plates were attatched by the frame manufacturer.

My TR2 from '54 has "Z 20" on it. I assume "Z" stood for Triumph frames. I do know every time they improved the frame in any way, it was given a new number.

Not sure if any one has ever correlated the numbers with the changes. It would be very interesting to see the progression of improvements over the years on these frames, as they relate to the numbers.

My frame is "Z28". My 1958 TR3A was "born" on Feb. 14th, 1958. The Comm. No. is TS 27489 LO. This is how it looked in 1988 during my restoration. Originally, the frame was Primrose Yellow. I've driven 102,000 miles since 1990.

It would appear the "Z" series applies to the TR2 and TR3 series only?

What other letters are out there and for which TR series?

My early TR4 (CT5589) has a large B and a smaller 8.

That frame sequence number was applied by the manufacturer, Sankey, for each update such as strengthening the rear lever arm shocker brackets, various minor changes to fuel line fixings, brake mounts, and bracketry including when the split steering was fitted.

There was another mark on the front crossmember to give dead centre for frame straightening.

Regards,

Viv.

So the TR2 and 3 were a Z plate.
The TR4 was a B plate.
And the TR4a had a C and D plates, and they all changes nos. with improvements.

Any other examples out there? Would be interesting to see a full listing of plate letters and their cars.

My car seems to be a mix between a 58 and 59. I could only see the "Z" standing proud, but after the frame came back from sand blasting, I can see 29 stamped next to the Z.
