Starter Motor brush spring 1948-54 Petrol and Series 1 and 2 2LT Diesel

It’s my understanding that the 1948-54 Petrol and Series 1 and 2 2LT Diesel used a Lucas M418G starter motor. Is this correct? If so I am needing brush springs for it. Does anyone know who supplies them, and what the original Lucas Part Number is for the springs?

I have a Triumph TR3 that uses a version of this model of starter and have had no luck with the Triumph forums finding a supplier of the correct springs, or the correct Lucas part number. Attached is a picture. You will notice it has only 3 coils, and the center section that attaches to the post has a large hole and large tab. Later model starter springs typically have 4 coils and the center hole and tab are smaller.

I know I can buy a modern high torque starter, but I have spent considerable time refurbishing the Bendix, only to have a $2 spring break.

found this one on on ebay OZ.

All others i found are the four coil later version,
hope this is of some help
looks like they are rarer than rocking horse poop.

Thanks for info. Do you know the model number of starter on the 1948-54 Petrol and Series 1 and 2 2LT Diesel Land Rovers. Knowing this would be nice. Its stamped on the casing as in attached picture. Its quite possible the M35G starter used the same springs

I have just done another search and found this

starter spring 5.png

they do international shipping, might be a good idea to drop them an email they look right compared to your original.
I wouldnt think Lucas would use the same motor sectin on many different vehicles and just change the ally head part

This is a starter for a landrover series 1, if you compare it to yours the motor is probably the same just the drive bit wois different

Literally just spoke with them. They told me this Land Rover used the M45 starter. That said in sure Lucas used many of the same parts for different models of starters. Both the M45 and M418G were made during the same time period, with the latter being a larger starter explaining its use in the Land Rover.

Thanks, was able to find online two Lucas parts catalogues. It would appear that Lucas Starters M45G, M35G, and M418G all used the same brush spring. Part numbers 270004 and 251109 being the same part. Pages 10 and 11 in the 1945 catalogue, and page 18 in the 1948-1962 catalogue. Being that a number of outfits list springs for the M45G, hopefully I should able to get them.
Attached is a pdf of the 1948-1962 catalogue. The 1945 catalogue is too large a file to attach so am providing the following link to it: https://ttypes.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/16.pdf
If I am mistaken please let me know so as not to lead folks down a rabbit hole.
Thanks again

thats how i figured it, lucas would have used same parts for multiple starters, then later upgraded to the 4 coil ones.

Might check with Rogers North, they specialize in the older Rovers. Also check ebay.co.uk

I was able to find new spring that are a close match to the original ones. They are replacement Ford parts. Only two coils (vs the original 3) but same outer diameter, outer "hook" that holds down brush, and inner diameter that attaches to post. Got them from Romaine Electric that has locations in many areas of the US. Went by their shop and was told Ford and Lucas cooperated and they were able to find similar Ford spring. Romaine Part number 69-2701. $1.25 each. Starter is installed and working.

Thanks to those who offered to send me some original salvaged springs. I'll now be able to take the car out on "Drive Your Triumph Day" February 10th.

Was also able to confirm that the model of starter in the Triumph TR3 is M418G, not M45 as discussed in some other threads. Many of these starters came is a variety of configurations. These two starters look identical when looking at pictures in service manuals, but the M45 is a much larger motor used in tractors, and apparently some Land Rovers.
