Spongy brakes and annoying hood prop

Are your plug wires shielded? Plugs also?

How do you mean, Steve? They are new plugs and wires, but nothing special. Do you mean shielded like coax cable, with an outer braid that is shielding the pulse signal from the inner wire?

If they are new, they are probably shielded. Old wires, which you can still get if you ask for them, produced a lot of RF interference. I have a set in one of my cars. I feel sorry for anyone I'm driving near on the freeway! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif They should say shielded on the side but not always.

I've seen some plugs freak out tachometers too. Champion plugs have an R when they are radio suppressed. For example, the two plugs I use on my Y-Type are N5 and RN5. Same plug, one is shielded and one isn't.

Nicely engineer'd, Julian. Sorry to hear of the dancing dwell device. There's so much raw RF under-hood on these old lumps it's likely they leave a wide 'footprint'... kinda like a Marimba band in a McDonald's restroom.

Can you return it? Mebbe hunt up an analog one on e-bay?

Hi Doc. It is an analog one ...

Make is Beldon. The instructions are a little confusing, as they are written for the whole series of their meters. This meter has red/black wires for the battery connection, a blue clip wire, and an inductive pickup. It's not clear to me if I can use the blue clip wire instead of the inductive pickup, which would probably help if I could.

The meter also measures Volts and Ohms and RPM ... the RPM measurement was way all over the place, too, so it's definitely a problem related to the signal pickup.

Ah. Belden.

Red (+V) wire to the dizzy-to-coil lead, black (-V) to ground; 4-cyl, and dwell selections should get you a reading. If it's bouncing, you may have a points issue.

You know, now that you brought it up I use to have a dwell meter, wonder where it is hideing? Going to have a search party tomorrow. Had forgotten all about that.

If you can't find it, you can have mine
