Spongy brakes and annoying hood prop

Today I fitted a new handbrake cable to Harold. I also fitted new boots to the handbrake levers on each rear brake drum. After making all the adjustments to the mechanism, I decided that I would replace the wheels, lower Harold off the four jacks, and take him for a spin.

By a spin, I mean backwards and forwards a few yards! It sounds very minor, but it was an exciting moment - when Harold was delivered he had no clutch and no brakes, so it was the first time he'd actually travelled under his own steam.

The engine fired up very nicely: it is much improved after the tappet adjustments I did last week. I selected a gear, and off we went, at a leisurely pace. Quite exhilarating

But the brakes felt spongy ... there must still be some air in the system. I am so tired of messing with the brakes!

The final job of the day was to fit a used telescoping hood prop. This turned out to be non-trivial. After fitting it to the existing mounting points, I found that the hood would only go halfway down. At that point the prop was full retracted: it looked like the mounting point on the wing was perhaps too far forward. I'm not sure how to resolve this, and would welcome advice. In the meantime I will continue using a broom handle!

do what i have on my b-gt. no hinges and use pins to secure the engine cover to the vehicle. that way to work in the engine bay you lift off the entire engine cover.

Julian - Throw the telescopic prop out and get a set of gas struts, you won't be sorry. The struts are down low so they don't interfere with working under the hood and they keep the hood up at about a 80° angle (sortof like putting the hood on viagra. The struts are available from Rick Ingram (fittingly, Rick is a pharmasist). His e-mail address is mowog1@aol.com. Cheers - Dave

Thanks, Dave!

Yep...got 'em in stock for the steel bonnet, bootlid, and even the GT hatch!

Sounds like the mounting holes are way off. Just redrill them, or make a small bracket for the lower one.

I think you must be right. Perhaps my steel hood is older than the car ... it has a clip for a rod-type strut.

Some careful measurement is needed before I start drilling a new position for the bottom mount hole.

I have a telescoping rod on an early bonnet. I would be happy to measure it for you or let you measure yourself so you can get a visual. However I won't be home for a few days.

That photo is very useful, Steve: thanks.

Your car is a RHD?

I'd like to know the distance between the lower mounting bracket and the back of the hood aperture, if it's easy for you?

Yes, it's RHD. I will be happy to measure it for you when I get home.

In the mean time, here are a couple more photos I found that show the rod mounting...

Wow! How did you get your carbs to shine like that?! Are they chromium plated?

From your pics it looks like my lower mounting point is too far forwards.

This gives me an idea: how about having the whole of the engine compartment chromed?!

Those are chrome covers. They were on the car when I bought it so I just left them. Or maybe I'm just too lazy to clean up what's underneath!

You can buy them from Moss and other parts suppliers.

So I fixed the hood prop:

(Note the shiney lid on the new brake master cylinder in the background.)

I tried out my new inductive tach/dwell meter. The results were disappointing. The needle was swinging all over the place, and it was impossible to take a reliable reading.
