General MG Solutions for topical MG rear main leak?

I know it's part of the charm, but when I finish my (final) MGA restoration, I will probably give it to my daughter, who might not appreciate the typical oil leaks. Has anyone found a good solution to the chronic rear main leaks on these engines?

I know of no conversion set to make it possible to use a "lip seal" in the scroll seal engines. Some folks have made one-off back plates but it's pricey to do. Best R.O.I. is to buy her a long aluminum cookie baking tin. :smirk:

One solution is to attach drip pan to engine as shown which must be drained every so often.

Bob, there is a conversion using a seal from, I think, a Chevy engine, I'm not sure of the proper procedure, but it is a little pricey as it should be done by a machine shop. The conversion kit costs around $250.00, the cost to have it installed depends on the machine shop rates. It does work, but pricey. PJ

Here's a picture of the conversion. As you can see, it's not a quick job.

Doc, I think the use of a speedy sleeve on the crank is incorporated in the process to cover the scroll. PJ

PJ it looks like the seal lip would ride not on the scroll but on the flywheel flange. Just from the picture , as that's a much larger diameter than the scroll if that black double lipped thing is the seal that is.

You know what, I think your right. Remembering when I put a new seal in my 93 Chevy truck with a 350 in it, it appears to be almost identical, on the outer flange. :encouragement:

Yup. And that would eliminate the need for a "speedi-sleeve" over the scroll.
