Repair Bottom Line Shock

Just digging up this old thread for anyone who cares (and as a warning).

Just a refresher... I had inspection done by a local LBC garage. I was told I needed $5600 worth of work, including, front end rebuild, rear end rebuild, F and R brakes, rotors, brake hoses, bearings, and dif just to name a few.

Pulled the tires on Saturday to do the brakes... front brakes did need replacing. Rotors did not. Brake hoses did not (though they were original! They had a tag on them dated 4/76!). Rear brakes didn't need to be done just yet. An the big one... front and rear did NOT need rebuilding from what I could see. Rear bushing were starting to dry rot, and could be replaced (already on order, but a total rebuild? I don't think so.

Wheels turned nicely, with no clunks from the dif, also.

So I am really happy I just didnt tell the shop to do the work, and didn't give them all that dough they were asking for.

I have to find another shop here in Maryland...

Aldwyn, those brake hoses from 1976-replace them!
They may look ok, but its not worth taking chances on something that important, they are 30 years old and must be rotted by ozone, whether you can see it or not.

(Just my opinion!)

That is why the shop wanted to replace those. Plus, it would be their liability if they didn't. Won't defend them on the other stuff though. Those hoses will break down internally before they show external trouble. They are too inexpensive not to replace when they are that old.

Ok then. Another area on my TR6 that needs
replacing to make it safe to drive.

Where are these brake hoses located? and how
many of them? I looked at the Moss exploded
diagram and could not tell what to purchase.

There are 4. The two in the front are the same. The two in the back are different.

If I get a chance to do it this week/weekend, I'll try and remember to take pictures! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif



Phil, did I leave my break bleed bottle at your place? I think I forgot to put it in the truck when I left, as I dont seem to have it!
 
Thanks Aldwyn,

I had to remove a small diameter metal pipe
from the rear wheel assembly when I pulled out
the broken trailing arm. I guessed at the time
it was for the brakes since fluid ran out of it.

But it was metal, not what I would call a hose?
Is this piece, in fact, what you are talking about?

Dale, follow that metal line and you should find the rubber lines (unless Pedro put on braided stainless flex lines, which would be completely shocking). Do the same for the other side. The fronts are right next to the suspension, should be an easy find.
 
Yeah! That's it Shawn!

DPO Pedro paid to have braided SS lines installed!

The same Pedro that installed a piece of his aquarium
air pump clear plastic hose to connect the clutch master
and slave.

Now seriously, are the braided SS brake hoses standard
issue I can purchase at our local speed shop? Or must I order from the Big Two and/or minor 1?

As long as the threads match you could probably try your local speed shop. Take the rubber hose in with you to match up lengths and you should be set. You might even be able to get them cheaper than Moss wants for them. If they have a cross reference book they might even list a set. Worth a shot either way.

Its always hard to find a good shop. For my daily car I asked a couple of taxi drivers and found a pretty good one that way that I've been going to for the past 15 years, but LBCs might be a little trickier....
