Removing scratches from windshield

If I can effect any improvement at all, before biting the bullet and buying a new windshield glass, I'll be satisfied. But, yes, I believe that at some point, a 50-year old windshield needs to be replaced. As I expect this is something I would have to do myself, I'll probably put it off as long as possible.

IMO. I can't say for certain, but I think a glass polisher would be too harsh for plastic. There are special compounds just for polishing headlamp covers.

There are kits around that start with coarser abrasive, and work down to the cerium oxide.

FWIW, there are also shops that can replace the windshield in a TR3 for you. I got a quote from one last year, after a "cable guy" dropped a wrench through the windshield from my wrecked TR3A. Don't have the quote handy, but ISTR it was about $400.

Randall. You are right. The shop I use can do it... and probably for about the same amount you give above.

But just out of curiosity, how difficult would it be to replace the glass in a windshield?

Sorry if I misunderstood, Ed. My point was just that you don't "have" to do it yourself if you don't want to.

It's been a lot of years since I tried; all I really remember is that I was more than happy to have the local auto glass shop finish the job for me. They also only charged $20 (probably $100 today) which seemed like a bargain especially since they furnished the right thickness of glazing.

But then, I've never been very good at bodywork and such; it might be a lot easier for you.

Save your money when it comes to that Harbor Freight lens polishing kit. I tried it, hours later I'd only managed to make things worse.

It did not remove any of the scratches already there, instead, it added thousands of new ones.

The windshield that was hard to see through in low angle sun was transformed into a windshield that is impossible to see through in low angle sun.

What about the glass polishing kit that comes from Eastwood? I think it is cerium paste.

Randall. Believe me. If is difficult for you... it is impossible for me.
