Penny's bodywork begins

Fun! Almost makes me want to tackle another project... NAH!

Yeah, I think you're done with projects for a while. Heck, it doesn't even make ME want to tackle this project, and I'm stuck in deep... :wall:

Drew you did a good job digging out the old beading. Angle grinder? Will try to get mailed tomorrow afternoon.

That's the body shop's work, Jim. My only role was to choose them and write the check.

I am very pleased with the work they're doing. This shop is definitely not the cheapest, but they do good work and have been great at keeping me informed on what they're doing.

Things have slowed down a bit with Penny's bodywork. Shop's had some folks out on vacation and we're still waiting on the patch panels for the rear quarter -- it's on back order from everyone right now (AH Spares told me the factory moved and they haven't started production back up yet). They hope to get the fender beading installed soon, then it's just the quarter panel repairs and paint left to do.

I'm patient, as this is going to be a multi-year project no matter what I do. I will be happier once she's back in my shop and I can start on the other work, but it'll take the time it takes.

Hi Drew,
I looked down on you yesterday (well, on Heber City at least) from the top of Deer Valley and thought about your bugeye. Things always take longer than you plan, but it looks like you're getting a good job. I need to post more pictures of my bugeye, which looks to be slightly behind yours in terms of body work.

Drew,
I received my rear quarter patch panels, both inner and outer from AH Spares about 3 weeks ago and they were on BO for 2 months. The quality looks good and I can't wait to weld them in!
Rut

Good to hear, Rut. I'll have to get hold of them again and see what they say.

And yes, we need some pictures Keith. Did you make it to Field Day last weekend? I was busy running around the show and rarely had a chance to stop and chat with anyone.

Missed British Field Day this year. Ironically, I was in Britain. Pictures to follow later tonight!

That's a good reason to miss the show!

I actually made it this year with a running car, but not a Bugeye -- was able to have the new '67 MGBGT down there. Much more fun to be there with a car than just as a spectator.

Nice B GT and the best year as well. I've owned 2 but only as parts cars.:blue:

Kurt

Thanks, Kurt. This one popped up local to me and I couldn't resist it. RHD of course.

Gives me a good touring car, and something to drive while I restore Penny. It's a little rougher than it looks, but still plenty drivable.

As the guys up in Fawn Grove working on the airplane restoration would tell me "We watch the calendar, not the clock". Better to take the time and get it done right rather than get it done fast.

Nice looking MGB-GT. I think I understand why LBC owners invariably own multiple cars: One to drive while the other one is being fixed up. I'm not in that category yet, but I imagine at some point, I will be.

Small progress

Heard from the shop today and they've been able to make some progress again. They've done a little sorting on the doors and started cutting the rear quarters for the repair panels (still waiting on one of them from the suppliers, will contact them and another source mentioned by a fellow BCFer this week).

They found that the current patch panels were welded right over the old, rusted metal. Guess there were a couple layers of rusted metal under there. I'll swing by at some point this week and take a look. One way or another we'll get it sorted out and solid again.

Still, good to see some progress again.

Drew,
I think that was a pretty common fix back in the day!

At least it's not just poor Penny.

It'll set the budget back a bit to fix properly, but in the end it'll be done correctly and that's what really matters.

When did this one happen? What a beauty. Progress on the Sprite looks good. Doing it right
is such a rewarding thing. Well...I was speaking of soul fulfilling rewards.....the $$$$$...
not so rewarding,eh?

The wallet drain is what it is (painful!). I admit I'll be happiest once the body and paint are done and the car is back here -- at least then I'll know what the financial damage is for that stage and can start saving for the next part. Still, I'm dead set on doing this Bugeye right and it'll give me many happy years once its done.

As for the MGBGT, picked it up in June:

It's rougher than it looks in the photo, but it's a decent car. Just finishing up converting it to bolt-on wheels -- after 7 tube-related flats in a couple weeks and the discovery of very worn splines. I'm not a wire wheel fan anyways. Something to drive while the Bugeye is under restoration.

Minor Bugeye update -- the quarter panel repair pieces are back in stock and I've ordered the one we need. Moving right along!

Another small update, the new panel came in today so I'll bring it down to the shop on my lunch break tomorrow. Hopefully we'll see some movement now.

Work is progressing on Penny again. They've been working on getting the bonnet done, patching a few small bits and getting the new fender beading installed. I've also got the inner quarter closing panels in hand to drop down to the shop next week. So we're moving along.

Work has been in fits and starts, but they are making progress. At this point, I'm assuming we'll be finishing up in the spring -- winter is the shop's busiest time. That's okay, as I'm out of garage spaces anyways, and it's nice to be able to park the daily driver Jeep inside for the winter.
