TR2/3/3A Overheating Problem

Thank you.

If I am understanding the system using the original Bellows thermostat the bypass got closed off as the thermostat opened. Now with the modern thermostat it is always fully open.

I saw the price difference regular thermostat to Bellows. As you said Ouch.

yes I think that's right.

Original purpose of bypass was to allow the engine to warm up more quickly, by recirculating the coolant in the block, and bypassing the radiator until the bellows finally hit temperature (165 degrees) and opened.

Hi Guy,

1st. Where is "Chapin, SC"?
2nd. No, I have done none of the things you mention, YET!! I have "Mark Macy's fan, New water pump, New belt, 165 fail safe thermostat & all necessary tune up parts. I'm simply waiting for my mechanic buddy to allow the time in his garage since he has a lift etc etc.

Geo, Thx for your input on the front apron! I may be waiting 30yrs or so myself!!:tennis:

Regards, Russ

Russ,

Chapin is just 20 miles NW of Columbia off I26.
close to Lake Murray.

once you take the apron off you will find all sorts of things to do.
but as Geo said, taking the apron off is not nearly as difficult as we imagine.

I'm getting geared up to remove the front wings, just to see what's going on behind them.

best regards,

Guy

I partially blocked the bypass years ago since the skirted thermostats were NLA back then. (1989) At that time I had the original radiator rodded and various leaks fixed. It always ran a little hot, 195º-200° but never boiled over. Finally in 2013 the radiator called it quits. Since the apron had to come off I did everything....Tropical fan, aluminum radiator, lo-amp draw pusher fan (I'm still running a generator), new deflector and finally an original wide-mouth grill with the larger holes. We drove thru Monument Valley last year, 110° in the sun, (no shade in Monument Valley!) The engine never got above 185º; However, the driver and navigator overheated often. The fan was overkill, I turned it on once and the thermostat started to close !
George, did you know that º comes in two sizes? (alt + 0176 for the little one and 0186 for the big one ° º....)
