71 MGB should have a 1280 at the bottom right side on the face of the speedo. If its a 1000 then your reading will be way off! The nut at the top center is a bear to get off. I remove the easier nut and bracket and then try to turn the speedo to make it easier to get at the other nasty nut. When installing, install the top bracket and nut with the speedo turned so that mess is at the bottom. then rotate the speedo and install the other nut. Tighten hard to get to nut if you can! When you are finished with that project you will understand why I like to play with earlier cars. 63-67 are much easier. Bob
Thanks guys...I'll give it a shot in the next couple of days. Doc I'd love to send you the RT ticket if only so I could meet you . But can't any of you just loan me a smart 2 year old??
I bought a used MGB Smiths speedo off of Ebay at a good price BUT it wasn't the correct one. It shows 1000 in the bottom right corner instead of 1280. What does this mean anyway? I guess everything would be way off like Bob says but how much (approximately) and in which direction? I guess I now have a speedo for sale :frown:
Thanks Mickey...When Carla gets home from school with the car tonight I'll get the numbers off of it. It definitely shows 1280 in the lower right corner of the face.
Gary, The gears in the unit are made from a fiber material and when the shafts become dry they sometimes lock up and strip a couple teeth off. One gear runs the odometer and one runs the trip meter. It's not uncommon for both to go around the same time. $175.00 to rebuild it is not bad at all, just be glad you don't have a TF one to have restored! Close to $500.00.
This is out of a TF, but their operation and some parts are basically the same, as some MGB parts will fit. PJ
You already have, just by discussing your problem on the forum. Someone else out there will learn a bit and be helped from reading the post. Good luck with the fix Mickey provided. Hope it works out. PJ
