"Name that Tube Shock"

Hi, A previous owner of my 75 Midget put tube shocks on the front. I would now like to replace them. The problem is, I don't know the specs. I went to 3 auto part stores yesterday but never found a match. The guys helping me literally just guessed and started opening boxes to compare. Anyone out there have a clue as to how I can figure out what I need? Thanks, Cindy in Indy

Don't know Midgets that well. But if it's anything like MGB's they have an aftermarket SPAX Adjustable tube shock system. If that’s the case Victoria British and Moss catalogs have replacements available. Check’em out on line if you don’t have a catalog.

Of course the previous owner might have been a creative sort and come up with something on his own. In that case you might have to pull the shock and try'n match it best you can. This could involve a little trial & error but when you identify it make note of it for the next time you or some other poor sod has to replace it down the road.

Good luck!

You might want to clean up the shocks on your car and see if there is any numbers or other info stamped on them.

Anyway, it depends on the kit, but many use:
Monroe Shock Absorber part # 5877R (or the equivilant in other brands).
These shocks are original equipment on the rear or 1984 Dodge Colts (and similar Mitsubishis).
I have a webpage on my homebuilt conversion to these tube shocks at:
