My Toyota - replacing the head gaskets...

Re: My Toyota - Reassembly!!

Yeah, hopefully the superglue will hold the 2 broken plastic vacuum fittings. I spread lots more across them after setting them in place - hoping to make sure that there is no heat-breakage or leaking from the glued plastic tubes.

And yes, The world did seem to come to an end, for a day or so. I've managed to come here at least once an hour while the site was down with at least 4 different update pics.... But I figured I'd wait it out. BCF is the best site on the net!!!!

On the engine... I have yet to install the upper intake manifold, the throttle body, the alternator, the fan, (fix the small hole in the radiator - with solder over the small hole - if any other sugestions, please make them quick), the filter/hose intake system, and I should have a new truck again!

Re: My Toyota - Reassembly!!

REPLACE those superglued vacuum fittings at your "earliest convenience" sir!

Re: My Toyota - Reassembly!!

I will, the bad part on both of them, is that I'll have to get them from a u-pull-it junkyard, as I've not found either anywhere for retail. Really bad part is that one of them (no matter where I get it used) will be brittle anyway. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif because it sits on the top of the engine, and has hot coolant flowing less than 1/4 inch from it.

I wish I knew what they were called... Then I might have a better chance of finding new ones. I may post pics later of each one... hopefully Banjo will know what they are called... or better yet a couple of toyota part numbers. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Re: My Toyota - Reassembly!!

OK... Tonight when I get home from work... The upper intake is going on. I really need to get this truck running soon. I don't think the MGB is gonna last much longer without some serious workshop time. Brakes fading quickly - Something is scrubbing in the front during braking (maybe I burned a pad up, or the bearings are starting to go) I have new parts for both, but not the time to fix them yet... and if it's the pads, I'll probably need a couple rotors too.

But, not much left to do to get the toyota going. If I can finish the assembly, and go buy new plugs thursday, I'll have a ride on friday!

Re: My Toyota - Reassembly!!

Wouldn't matter if you gotta BICYCLE your butt around on Friday! Get to that meeting! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: My Toyota - Reassembly!!

Oh, I'll be there, if I have to travel by osmosis. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Let's see, It's only about 7 miles from my house, so what's that about a 3 hour walk? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif

Re: My Toyota - Reassembly!!

beeseeclay would be mucho fastero!

As for the scrubbing you're hearing, do the easy check first. Last time I did my front brakes, the pads starting slipping out of position after several thousand miles. The pads on the right front slipped out of position and scrubbed on the inner portion of the rotor... I thought I was gonna have to redo my brakes at first, but it turned out I just had to reposition and make sure the were locked into place better.

Re: My Toyota - Reassembly!!

Well... I can see the finish line now...
Just have to put on the alternator, the distributor, new sparkplugs, the belts, the fan, and the aircleaner assembly! Woohoooo! I even soldered the radiator.
Here's the progress so far today...

Re: My Toyota - Reassembly!!

Isn't the test tomorrow?

Re: My Toyota - Reassembly!!

Thanks Tony!

I was hoping get off tomorrow, so I was in one day in advance mode.

Shucks ain't getting the day either.

Ha!, leaving at 5 today.

Re: My Toyota - Reassembly!!

Yes the Evaluation starts tomorrow at 9am.

More on the toyota... Everything is on now, and triple-checked, except for the sparkplugs and air cleaner! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif Hoping Julie can pick me up some on her way home from work, along with some antifreeze... Then the toyota test will begin!

Re: My Toyota - Reassembly!!

wow... watching you replace the head gasket on this yota is like watching you build the whole car! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: My Toyota - Reassembly!!

Feels like it too.

Re: My Toyota - Reassembly!!

Yea, Jaybird is gonna have Binabox restored before you drive that 4 Runner. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif
sorry I coulden't help it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I've done head gaskets on that engine (as you know), and they're a BIG pain. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cryin.gif

Re: My Toyota - Reassembly!!

I drove it earlier, but I think I have the distributor off by one gear tooth... ran nicely at idle... Drove about a mile up the road, and after it warmed up, won't hold idle...

But it did run... I'll check it again early in the morning.

Re: My Toyota - Vroom!!

I'll be re-checking my vacuum hoses when I get back from the shrink. It's really weird, It runs real nice and smooth when you first start it up, but Take it about a mile up the road, and it want's to quit running if you let off the throttle /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Hmmm, just thought of something... Would a bad O2 sensor cause something like this? I think I read somewhere that O2 sensor could be ruined if it got coolant in/on it in situations where the head gasket fails.

Lol - /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Re: My Toyota - Fin - Woooohooooo!!

I'm done! It runs, with the timing correct, and I had 2 vacuum hoses swapped (out of 14 or 15 that aint bad). Soldered radiator hole is holding up fine, runs very nicely! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif Needs an oil change soon though.

<Patting myself onna back> It only took 2 months, and one of those I didn't do anything at all to the truck. So I guess about 4 weekends all together. PITA - I never want to do it again.

I've now rearranged the cars out front, so the Alfa is in the ~Major~ working area (where I park the non-running ones)... I'll look at the MG's brake problem next week.

Fin.
