My Toyota - replacing the head gaskets...

Well, yesterday I bought some extensions at sears (biglots didn't have any), a 20" craftsman, and a set of 3 (of their cheaper brand) wobblies. Today, I mustered up enough will to go out remove the bolts for the downpipe. Got the first one loose good... Got the second one loose good (and hit myself hard in the chest with the 2 ft long breaker bar), then stripped the third one all the way - came off tho - just no threads left on the nut... I bet the stud didn't fair any much better. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif I still can't get the head off...

I really only wanted to do this one side as the other side looks to be a worse PITA than this one, but Banjo said they come off easier puling them both so <sigh> I guess I'll have to start taking that other side apart. I'm losing the will to want to work on this thing fast. The only thing keeping me going is the fact that I've got another year to pay it off at $200 a month, and the insurance on it is about $75-80 a month. And we need to have something big enough to haul the family on vacation in June.

Here's the engine right now...

Oh, and while I was under the truck I snapped a pic of the very evil bad headgasket problem on this evil truck engine...

Re: My Toyota - GOT THE HEAD OFF!!!!!

Here's the internals and the head (in case anyone wanted to see...
195453-headoff.jpg

I had to remove a pipe that runs betwwen the heads - it's bracket wouldn't let me slide the head off of the exhaust... Then lot's of prying and cussing and prying somemore (while being careful not to pry on the mating surfaces)

Jeeze I feel better now. Today's mission is accomplished.

Hey Banjo, How much (and where do I get) the wiring harness for the knock sensor? I'm gonna keep the sensor, but the wire is shot like you said it'd be.

Re: My Toyota - GOT THE HEAD OFF!!!!!

Mom's gonna love you when you get her beast back on the road, Kenny

Re: My Toyota - GOT THE HEAD OFF!!!!!

She prefers the Talon for the mileage, and when I get around to fixin the Alfa... She'll procure that I'm positive... It got better mileage than her car on the trip back from your house last month.

She does like the high-up driving position of the toyota 4x4 better than the little cars though.

Re: My Toyota - HEAD OFF!!!!!

I was just looking closer at the head... At least the valves are in good shape. I was really worried that the valves, or seats would be burned on that back cylinder. The piston looks a different color, but it's been eating coolant a bit too. Of course the thing that scared me most about it was corrosion in the cylinder wall... But that looks good too. There is some carbon build-up where the gasket ring had moved about a 1/4 inch to the rear of the block, but I think I can scrape it down - no problem. The fact that the plugs said Denso on them makes me think they've never been changed (they are really hard to get to)... but the one in that cylinder had a split insulator, and closed (clogged with crud) gap on it. I really wonder how long it was only firing on 5 cylinders?

Re: My Toyota - HEAD OFF!!!!!

You prob'ly never drove it runnin on six!

Re: My Toyota - HEAD OFF!!!!!

probably not... I'll be able to tell you when I get it running again. I only put about 2000 miles on it since I bought it. It would run rough at startup, then after a few minutes, it's smooth out... I think that one was the one not working for those few minutes. So It was probably firing after the crud was blown off, but not for most of the time I drove it.... I'm just glad that the broken insulator never fell into the cylinder... Looks like it was ready at any moment.

Any excuse to buy a tool....

Re: My Toyota - HEAD OFF!!!!!

Yeah... At this point, I've blown all the money I had to buy the gasket set... On new tools. I don't know whether to be happy or sad? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Re: My Toyota - HEAD OFF!!!!!

I'll get the part number of that wire for ya at work tomorrow. That's gonna be a dealer only item.
It's really easy to pull the other head right now, I'd do it. They blow at the front end of the passenger side, just like the back end of the driver side.
Keep pluggin, yer halfway there now. It goes back togeather easier.

Re: My Toyota - HEAD OFF!!!!!

Yeah, I been considering it... Since I already have the downpipe loose, I won't have to do the exhaust bolts on that side.... And it'll make the driver's side alot easier to go on. Plus the kit does come with both sides...

Let me know the part number on that harness... I'll check prices on it.... It can be had outside the dealer, I just haven't searched yet.

Re: My Toyota - HEAD OFF!!!!!

I just ordered my gasket and bolt set on ebay. Best prices I've found anywhere. Must be nearly wholesale actually, as most places want $200 for the gasket kit, and $70 or so for the bolts. I paid $138 shipped. Here's a link to the auction...
https://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayIS...N%3AIT&rd=1

He carries stuff for other vehicles too, just to let ya know... I let y'all know how the deal goes when the set get's here.

Re: My Toyota - Parts here!!

Wooohoooo!!! Finally! The man in the big brown truck just showed up, and brought me a box full of pretty parts! Rock Gasket head gaskets, intake gaskets, lot's of o-rings, exhaust manifold gaskets (the shiny metal things), valve cover gaskets, cam seals, new head bolts, and a few things I won't get to use like new valve stem seals. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Here's the pretty stuff! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thirsty.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif

I'll start puting it in next thursday. I hadn't really geared myself up for reassembly yet... And I figured out I will have to remove the cams to get 4 of the head bolts out all the way, and I have one (isn't there always one) cam bolt that the head is stripped and I can't get loose. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif
