MGB MGB Axles & Hybrid Rear End

beer's cheaper and gets'r done

Hahaha sympathy drinking - yet another reason - hehehehe

Oh me, toe removal was a peice of cake. It's the back, the back, the back. Tis getting better but oh so slow, been two weeks now and at this rate will be another two.

And Miss Agatha needs some love.

*SHHHH!!*** Jack!

I had 'em convinced it was TRAUMA!!!

Oh, well - maybe it's the Tanzian new year or something! Always a good reason to drink /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif

That back stuff is UGLY... I been really lucky so far <knocks head> as I had injuries young, and expect it'll "catch up" soon enuff.

Feels like a Trauma all right. Really though the toe thing was really easy and I do recommend if you have problems. Only took 30 min in and out the door and drove away.

fixes in-growns does it?

Yep, sure does according to my Dr., fixes forever.

you get grou discounts? I think I got nearly a dozen that need to be shot...

<u>Rear backing plates:</u> weigh about 2 pounds apiece...today I drilled a series of 1/2" & 9/16" holes around the outer circumference (in the indented area) - that dropped 1/2 pound per backing plate!

Next, I'm putting them in the lathe & cutting that 1/2" flare off the circumference where they stick out beyond the brake drum

photos next week

(plus, I'm gonna get rid of all that extra metal on the brake shoes themselves)

Just for you, Doc...the modified backing plate on the left weighs 1 pound; the original one on the right weighs 2 pounds......that's unsprung weight!

How much of that plate is actually needed for the brakes to work? (Sorry I've not been into mine yet).

A lot less that the one on the left in my photo - but Doc pointed out on the phone the other day that if I make big holes in it, rocks & stuff might get inside...he suggested if I do that to put fiberglass screen over the holes.

I was thinking the same thing looking at your holes... fiberglass would work better in the heat... I was orginally thinking glue some pantyhose material over the holes... but the fiberglass screen sounds better.

Looks like you could cut out spokes in a radial pattern and leave a ring around the edge to attach the screen to. Might loose more than half the weight that way.

That looks pretty effective Tony.

I could go lighter, Doc - but then I'd have to think how to block the bigger holes I'd cut in the center areas.

That's what Doc suggested, Jeff...I'm gonna wait to see how much weight I get off the brake shoes themselves before I take more out of the backing plates.

I think you've got more to go there, Tony. Mebbe 'nother half pound, easily! Use the screen to cover the whole plate.

Work it, babee, WORK IT!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif

That's what I was saying/thinking.
