Oh me, toe removal was a peice of cake. It's the back, the back, the back. Tis getting better but oh so slow, been two weeks now and at this rate will be another two.
Feels like a Trauma all right. Really though the toe thing was really easy and I do recommend if you have problems. Only took 30 min in and out the door and drove away.
Rear backing plates: weigh about 2 pounds apiece...today I drilled a series of 1/2" & 9/16" holes around the outer circumference (in the indented area) - that dropped 1/2 pound per backing plate!
Next, I'm putting them in the lathe & cutting that 1/2" flare off the circumference where they stick out beyond the brake drum
photos next week
(plus, I'm gonna get rid of all that extra metal on the brake shoes themselves)
A lot less that the one on the left in my photo - but Doc pointed out on the phone the other day that if I make big holes in it, rocks & stuff might get inside...he suggested if I do that to put fiberglass screen over the holes.
I was thinking the same thing looking at your holes... fiberglass would work better in the heat... I was orginally thinking glue some pantyhose material over the holes... but the fiberglass screen sounds better.
Looks like you could cut out spokes in a radial pattern and leave a ring around the edge to attach the screen to. Might loose more than half the weight that way.
That's what Doc suggested, Jeff...I'm gonna wait to see how much weight I get off the brake shoes themselves before I take more out of the backing plates.
