Making Progress

I'm pretty sure that the lag screws are NOT standard ADDCO. My rear ADDCO bar came with these clever U-bolts that go inside the frame, with nuts & washers on the outside (and end links just like PeterK describes).

I was a little dubious about the U-bolts when I installed them, but I just removed them the other day after almost 20 years of service and both the bolts & the frame where they were mounted looked fine. No signs of any bending or stress, so they were evidently perfectly adequate.

Hi Peter,

I like your idea and I think that I have all the parts to make that work. Will let you know how I make out.

I have an addco rear bar mounted on my TR6 and it has a metal plate welded to the frame with threaded studs that secure the bushing bracket with nylocs.

Cheers,
M. Pied Lourd

The chassis looks very good. I do agree with Peter about the lag screws. I think I would thru bolt the mounts to the frame with a plate welded to both sides so you don't crush the frame. Or at least weld one plate on the bottom of the frame and thread the holes. Over time those lags will come loose and damage the frame. Everything else looks great.

Eeek - lag screws, really?.... Lag screws are for joining wood and most certainly rip out of your frame taking bits of frame with it.

I second Peter's Eeek!!!

That's cat-arse-trophy waitin' to emerge. It'd be better to solidly mount it now rather than do damage control later, IMO.

When I break the welder out to work on the body, I will weld on some plates top and bottom and come up with a better solution as suggested.

Will do it at the same time that I weld in anothe tube inside where the rear shackles mount.

Thanks for the feedback.

Cheers,
M. Pied Lourd

The tube insert is also a good thing.

While you'll already be back there - have you added the rear spring locator kit - consists of bronze bushings and delrin washers to replace the rubber rear leaf spring bushings?

Hi Peter,

Yes, allready installed. Thanks.

Quick Update.....

Finished Up the front suspension this evening and will fit the new steering rack tomorrow....steering arms have been reversed as instructed for installation of the rack conversion.

Please excuse the rusty rotors.....I resisted the urge to buy some new ones...

Hey Skip,

Yep, I am happy with the progress....However, I knew that I would be ok with the mechanical stuff. Its the body work and welding that will be a challenge for me.

I always said that I wanted to learn to weld...the MIG is sitting in the living room still in the box, ready to go! I suspect that within the next month or so, I will begin practicing on the parts car.

Nothing to do but jump in. Grab a bunch of scrap metal, thick gauge to start, and just start hitting it with the MIG. It really is just a matter of practice and using the welder to get a feel for it. I'd recommend not even trying to run a bead on thin stuff for quiet some time (if ever), just do a set of tack weld (a quick 1-2 or 1-2-3 count) to start.

I think you'll come to love it - I can't imagine not having a MIG handy now. I use it all the time.

Let us know how you make out!

Nice to get it back on 4 wheels!

Started working on the Rack and Pinion Conversion today as well. I installed the mounting plate and test fitted the rack and then took it off again...I think that I will install it fully after I drop the engine back in it.

Looks to be on 12 wheels from here... :jester:

Good progress! It's pix like those wot make me feel like such a schlub.

In the last six weeks I've managed to clean and PAINT the pieces for the last of the suspension rebuild.

*sheesh*

Very nice!

Have you shown those rims before? Can't remember drooling at them earlier, but I am now. What are they?

Also- noticed you didn't opt for the later style ball joint / 3 degree trunnion - was that intentional, or just not considered? Rims look pretty wide, maybe that later style would give interference up front?

Keep those shots coming!
Randy

Hi Randy,

I did post once asking if anyone knew the origin of the rims when I first bought the car.

I found out a little more about them after I dug them out of the storage shed this morning. Wondering if anyone is familar with these rims or the company that produced them. Here are some pics of the backside.

I cleaned one up a little bit just for fun. I plan on re-painting and polishing the aluminum . I wasn't intending on using them, but I have to admit that they are growing on me....

Here they are in action

I didn't consider the later suspension set up as I am trying to build this car with the parts I have on hand between the good car and the parts car.

I hadn't seen them before, but they may be Dunlop's, as shown by Quiller:
Dunlop 13"

Just my opinion, but I think the look works, especially if you are staying with a racer look.

Breathing protection berfore welding. Prevent lung damage and/or life termination.

Also be sure those wheels are aluminum and not mags.

Hi Folks,

I`ve seen those rims on an MGB (I Think). I`m quite certain they are a "Stock" rim to somesort of Car but Which one ????????

I just thought of one. Would it be to an "MG Midget"? "Na"; Their not "15" inchers on a Midget!

Back to the drawing board.
