Making Progress

I wish my spare tire compartiment looked like that. You can see through mine and then through the trunk floor as well....

Well Scott, if it is any consolation, you could see through the side of the spare tire compartment on both sides as well as through to the trunk...Those patches have been made and just need a little more finishing.

Looks good David. I am dreading that part on my 59. Its undercoated and I haven't put much of a dent in it yet.

Hi Guys,

Bit of an update as I am on vacation this week and was able to work on the car for a little bit.

I decided to tackle the inner sills after thinking about them for a very long time...oddly enough, they weren't repairing themsleves no matter how hard I thought about it.....

So, some beginning pictures to refresh your memories

The outer was solid enough so I cut off the inner and pulled a patch from the parts car. Here are the side by sides.

Bought the manual metal punch as suggested. Works great

Off the the welding shop tomorrow to get the bottle filled and will finish it up tomorrow and then will start on welding the floor repair section back in.

Have you ever just wanted to get out a big can of Bondo :yesnod:

Fix one thing and find another....was cleaning up the bottom of the stills and found some pinholes and then started cleaning up the sides out the outer sill and beneath the bondo layer found some more holes. So, I did what was right and pulled the outer sill off completely. Not something I had anticipated doing. Here are some pics.

Also have a hole beneath the stone gard. Suggestions on how to fix this? I am thinking of cutting out the section in red and I need to get below it anyway to fix the sill. Anything that I should look out for...words of encouragement?

Dave-

Keep it up, the work you are doing looks great and is giving me more incentive to start tackling my 3A body. I missed the earlier discussion on the hole punch - is it better than the air tool version? I bought a Harbor Freight combo flanger/punch that in limited duty seems to do okay.

Hi Randy,

The punch seems to work pretty good and it comes with 6 different sized dies. It works up to 16 G sheetmetal though I can tell you that it takes some significant force to punch through that...I am lucky that I am a big guy and can lean on it. The air punch that I looked at only had one size die included so I thought that I would go for the flexibility.

It is really encouraging to see your progress.....I think if you are going to do it....do it right....even if you are not going for concourse restoration....that way it will be around.....

Dave - just read through the whole thread....not sure how I've missed it to this point - amazing work! What kind of MIG kit did you pick up? (apologies if you already mentioned and I missed it!)

Cam - I think it was something like this if not this exact Hobart model. If you are going to be doing any amount of welding you want a decent machine. You can also go to Weld-talk (at the Hobart site) and ask what they recommend, good people there.

I have the very same Hobart welder, circa 1992. It still works great and is more than adequate for any welding required for the car. It was $600 then... That was when MIG was fairly new technology for hobbyists. With CO2/Argon mix gas, welds look pretty darn good. I have gone through about 10 pounds of wire on my TR3 (although, I'm sure a good bit of that ended up on the floor, after grinding).

Hi Cam,

I have the Lincoln Easy Mig 140. Works very well and I am very happy with it. I am slowly figuring it out and now am more confident playing around with the wire speed and amps. You can buy one at CT for between 5/600. All in you will be around the 1000 dollar mark with a good auto darkening helmet/gloves/accesories/welding gas/bottle etc etc.

Will post some more pics this afternoon of the rear sill repair. Not completley done yet but you will get the idea.

Ah, that is right, thought you went with the Hobart. In any case, either of these are good machines and you want a good machine if you are going to jump in Cam.

I'd encourage you to go for it - once you have a MIG you'll wonder how you ever did without one!

JP - I know your frustration as I went through it. I had a very patient guy help me learn it in the beginning too. I'm not giving up on you man - you were so close - check your PM's and promise me you'll try one more time...
