Anyone seen louvres cut into a 3 hood ? Anyone have pics of same.I believe I saw this on a restored 3 in Classic Sports Car mag one time. Thinking of getting it done to cut down on underhood temps. Karl
Karl,
I believe ABACUS Racing (check the web) in Virginia Beach, VA has louvers in their TR3.
I also have a friend that is thinking of building an antique racer from an old TR3B that he got from me.
I will be interested in what yours looks like so I can show my him.

I sold a spare bonnet I had that was louvered. It looked a lot like the picture Randy linked to but the one I had on my parts car had a longer line of louvers. If you still need a picture send me an email or PM and I will send you one.
Find somebody who is reputable. I have a spare AH 100 hood that is louvered. Unfortunately, the once beautiful piece has a row of louvers running down each side the the hood cut a different angles.
Also, if you are very fussy about a clean engine compartment, you have to be careful everytime you wash the car. They are the ultimate drain holes.
These were original on my GT6. The car never ran hot and it was no problem to wash.
The biggest thing with louvres is to be (very) careful not to bend them. They are a real pain to get straight again. I was lucky and never had a problem but I knew a guy that did.
You will actually vent more air if you louvre the inner fenders rather than the hood. I saw some pretty convincing #'s on this debate several years ago.
Some was recent testing and some dated back to the late 30's when Ford had tried to eliminate the inner fender louvres but their flatheads got way to hot without 'em.
The interesting part was the data that seemed to indicated only a mild lowering of engine temps with hood louvres...
There was a post recently on the A-H forum and some guy does full width louvres like were used on early big Healeys...
Whereabouts on the inner fenders would the louvres go? Seeing how they wouldnt be visible, would they be different in size and shape than the bonnet ones?
I was under the impression that there were some louvered bonnets produced by Triumph, maybe for the TR2 race models? If anyone else has heard this, let me know. I don't think it was ever an option, but I am pretty sure that the company did produce some of these.
