Japanese gear box better?

...I vote for Bill Close in Arizona. He does quality work whether you live in Norway or Northern California.

He can be reached at (480) 835 - 0987. Bill's address is 3047 E. Nance, Mesa, AZ 85213...

Steve -- Just so I can keep him in mind... does he service ODs, do the various conversions, or both or what? Thanks!

Kodanja,
Assuming all of the input is correct it should give a fair number.
I had my speedo recalibrated to my new ratios and the calculator is about on the money with my speedo.
Geo,
Bill is a good Bud. Not sure about servicing the original OD's but don't think so. He has a rebuilt one sitting in his shop he's never used, he may put it in his very stock red TR3.
He'll do everything on the 5 speed conversion if coordinated. I drove my 3 over one morning, he had the kit ready (welded up etc.) and we put everything in in about 2 + hours. (I brought the Toyota tranny with me, he had everything else). I drove home way, way too fast on the 101 but luckily avoided tickets/picture taking.

Now I cant wait till a sunny dry day to find out for sure!

btw:
the type 9 Ratios are 6 cylinder standard:
1st = 3.36, 2nd = 1.81, 3rd = 1.26, 4th = 1.0, and 5th = .820

That's not a bad ratio, at 3k you should be doing 75mph using my cars specs. Beats the heck out of 60.
I'm not familiar with the TR6, what is your tire size/ diff ratio?

US-spec standard TR6 had 3.7 diff and 185 SR-15 tires on 5.5" rims. With the A-type OD, top gear was .82:1. The J-type was just a bit taller, something like .78:1.

According to the 72 handbook, 10 mph in 4th OD (A-type) was 395 engine rpm; so 70 mph should be 2765 rpm (ignoring tire growth due to centripetal force).

If you are looking in the U.S. the Merkur XR4i Type-9 ‘boxes have the ratios kodanja cites, but the input shaft is a different length to the v6 versions found in Europe – short for the XR4i and long for the V6.

The most common 5-speed Type-9 ‘boxes are from the European 4-cylinder Capri/Sierra. There’s some minor internal differences, but the main thing to note is that these have the short input shaft like the XR4i box. Ratios for these ‘boxes are: 1st = 3.65, 2nd = 1.97, 3rd = 1.37, 4th = 1.0, and 5th = .820

I am not sure of the source, but there is an article “Taking the Fifth” by Kim Henson from October 2003 that gives a whole bunch of detail. It helped me select the right ‘box for one of my current projects - fitting a 5-speed to my TVR 280i. I have an Acrobat copy. It is close to 3MB, so I don't think I can post a copy here, but I'd be glad to forward copies if anyone wants one, just send me a PM.

English Ford 5 Speed: Rebuilt Ford “Type 9” 5 speed transmission

This is a completely rebuilt Ford “Type 9” 5 speed transmission as used in the 4 cylinder English Ford Sierra sedans outside the USA. This comes with a non-modified or modified (you specify) front cover and the “short” input shaft (160mm). Rebuilt with all new bearings, synchros, layshaft, seals and gaskets. Ratios are 4 cylinder standard: 1st = 3.65, 2nd = 1.97, 3rd = 1.37, 4th = 1.0, and 5th = .82 , Comes with the one year warranty. These are popular for kit cars and conversions for many 4 speed transmissions in many British cars. Price is $1075 outright + $85 shipping in the USA.

If you plan to keep the car, and since you do not have OD. YES,go for it. a (toyota) 5-spd is a very good idea. HVDA--- Many have gone this route and love it and the service is excellent. I would want the Supra box myself.
I have an early 4-spd with A-type OD, so to me it is worth staying original, however, I plan to send it to Quantum to have a full blown rebuild to racing specs.(except not putting in a stag box-i won't make that much hp).

I'm also guessing you might could source a rebuild OD transmission from England. It's a lot closer than here and they seem to be cheaper there.
