In a quandary

tdskip asked the good question: what do I want to use whichever car I decide on for. I don't know: the fun with the GT was fixing it up, rather than using it afterwards. I think I wouldn't be selling if it was a convertible. I already have a very good sports coupe (a 911) ... so why would I take the GT out in preference? The GT6 falls into the same category, so I should shelve that idea.

I keep coming back to the TR6 or a Spitfire. Does a TR6 have a back seat big enough for a child, or is it strictly a two seater, like the Spitfire?
 
I'm not personally interested. I can't afford a "Prancing Pony" in any stretch of the imagination. I didn't get the # off the sign. The car is between intersections, so getting a "good look" is being done at 40MPH, which I tend to pay more attention to traffic than cars parked in drive ways.

If you want, I can stop off on my way home tonight and get more info...

No, many thanks for the offer, but as DrE, Steve and others are saying, it seems like it should be avoided. However it is a Ferrari ...!

The reality is probably that the owner gets offers all the time, and they're just waiting for a big one. Which wont be coming from me!

That is precisely the scenario I have intimate knowledge of.

I have had and restored many cars in my life... 1930 Model A, '57 Corvette (PLEASE don't ask about it), A Porsche 924 (ABSOLUTELY HATED THIS CAR AND IT FELT THE SAME WAY ABOUT ME), Jag XJ6, Datsum 280Z and 240Z, ad infinitum.

From these years of experience I have learned that a nice LBC is easy to restore, parts are available, it does not cost an arm and a leg, AND, they are an absolute BLAST to drive.... I do pick LBC's that are pre-1970 so that I am exemept from the smog device disasters..

Well, there's a local garage here with a line up of British cars, all old and tatty, all with "Not For Sale" signs in their windscreens. I passed by the other day, hoping to speak to the owner, but there was nobody there. It's basically a small workshop, and this line of cars outside, including a TR6, a TR4, a Bugeye, several MGBs, several Minis, an MGB GT, and a couple of others I couldn't identify.

I just talked to the owner on the 'phone. He said in fact they are all for sale ... just "by appointment".

The TR4 has not been started for 4 years, has rust on most of the body panels, but not on the floor. It's on original black California plates. Sounds like a liability :smile:

The TR6 I need to go and look at ... he came down a grand on his starting price, just while we were talking! It runs, has a good dash, little rust, good transmission, but he said the engine needed some work. But it's driveable.

Perhaps I should pay a visit over on the Triumph board and get the low down on the pros/cons of TR6s vs TR4s?

The 924 holds a *special* place in my heart... just not sure how to explain it. I wrenched on 'em for my bean money /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/devilgrin.gif

I've done restorations on ALL sorts, from a 1955 DB-2/4 convertible to Ferrari America. Old Rollies, Mercedes 300SL Gullwing, the list is outrageous...

The personally owned cars not on the list below were a '65 Lotus Cortina Mk-I, two other 105 series GTV Alfas, two MGB roadsters and a GT, ALL pre-'70. I actually TOTALLY agree with your conclusion re: LBC's.

If I did not already own my B and my A, I would buy either a Triumph (TR3) or an Austin Healy BN2 or a BN4 (like the one my business partner owns that I have restored for him)....

The mechanical fuel injection on the 924 just drove me nuts....Then I replaced the clutch only to discover a 6 foot long first motion shaft feeding the transmission that was out of a rear engine drive 911/912... I couldn't stand it anymore....

I absolutely understand how you made a living fixin' them...

HOWEVER... Great looking car and handled like a formula car....

I had a GREAT 280Z that I just could not get to pass smog... All of the work to make it pristine and I couldn't drive the darn thing...

Anyway... 'nuff said....

You need to drive a +2 Elan. Or ANY Lotus, for that matter. 924's are shoat-pigs.

You could shove someone in the back of a TR4 or TR6, but it wouldn't be safe (by modern standards) especially for a child.

As to a TR4 vs a TR6 - they have very different charterers in my experience. The TR6 is the better long distance choice, especially with an O/D, but the TR4 feels more frisky to drive in my opinion.

The Triumph board here is very active - if you ask for opinions there you'll definitely get some!

Julian, Lets get serious, I think that you should get a car that is very relyable and somthing that you can drive to school and look sharp in. If you find a car, that you like and consider, ask a lot of questions on the BCF. A lot of LBC owners have owned other cars and know which ones to stay away from.
Good luck on your search and selling your MG.
