Re: I may have found a TR3....but I want your advi

Funny how new triumphs can make you feel that way!

And every time I get behind the wheel (of my old triumph), I feel that way again.

The trunk lid has an underside consistent with the older models (channels instead of rods) and the trunk is square at the back. It looks like the removeable trunk rack has never been off, since the wing nuts and threads are painted. Do the doors not close when the side curtains are on?

I think it looks great -aside from the brake/clutch kludge. You will need a vent on that type rocker cover, or oil will leak everywhere during spirited driving. The other style cover used a vented cap.

Are you old enough to be a kid again? I am happy for you.

Randy-

What happened to your pictures? I wanted to drool some more!

The doors seem a bit odd to me and until I see it I can not say for sure what is up there. The pictures with the side curtains show the door only partially closed.....why? Not sure.

That is an expensive valve cover he has on there....but I agree it needs to be vented.

Old enough to be a kid again? Well, I'm 45 and still remember what it was like to buy the 1971 MGB while in highschool in 1982. I had to wait a week to go pick it up and that week lasted forever....this week seems to have taken on the same type of delay. Patience.

This has been fun to watch developing Randy - thanks for keeping us posted.

It is surprising how often you see sidescreen TRs with the doors not closed properly. I think that it is because it is difficult to slam them shut with the sidescreens fitted.

That is certainly the case with mine. If I'm just popping in somewhere for a short time, and the first slam doesn't get it, (hmmm, I'd say about 30% of the time) I just leave it that way.

Notice how the two body plates are a: both natural (one should be painted) and b: side-by-side instead of one above the other?
In addition, I think the commission number tag isn't in quite the right location. Didn't the 3As with the smaller tag all have it down lower and closer to the edge? I've checked several photos I happen to have handy, and they all match my recollection. Below is one from Don Elliott.

Not necessarily a problem, but I find it scary to buy a car that may have had the tag changed. Went through that with my most recent Triumph acquisition; and it looked for awhile as though I would not be allowed to register it in CA (or worse yet, have it confiscated). The CHP here make you give them the car, which they drive into a locked impound area while they inspect it ... it all turned out OK for me, they just put a new VIN tag on it, but it's not an experience I would care to repeat.

UH, OH. I'm in big doo-doo. I moved my commission number plate. I needed room for the electrics.

Re: I may have found a TR3....but I want your advi

Thanks Randall.....a valid point and funny I should read that after hanging up the phone with the owner.

A few things took an interesting twist today on the phone.

1. The S/N of this car ends in LO. However it does not have overdrive in it.

2. The VIN sounds like it was "purchased" many years ago as the original was not around when he bought the pieces that made up the car.

I ma not too worried, but Wisconsin has some pretty sticky rules about titling previously salvaged or junked cars. In fact you can't. I am sure there is away around this rule, but I am not versed in the dark side of vehicle registration

In addition, the more I hear about this car, it sounds like it was (albeit many years ago) quite a rust bucket. The repairs were done in the garage , but primarily with body filler. The rockers were replaced, but the fenders were not..... In fact it sounds like it might be the "bitsa" TR3 I have been trying to avoid.

Actually I think the term is "cold feet"

Randy - from your last post, and some of the things you and I have talked about, I think you should trust the advice of your feet.

Re: I may have found a TR3....but I want your advi

I agree with Randall's comment re the location of the commission plate but before we get Randy's underwear in a twist I'll add that the cavalier positioning of the Mulliners and Standard plates suggests to me lack of attention to detail rather than mischief.

The commission plate (and brass tags) seem to be secured with hex-head bolts instead of rivets for the plate (that could be an issue with some MVD/DMV/BMV officials) and flat-head screws for the tags. The commission plate also looks way too nice to be 50 years old. But then Moss & TRF sell them so not surprising that a new one might be used on a restoration.

I rarely wear underwear...and when I do it usually something pretty unusual..... Dang I heard that somewhere.

The location and condition of the tag don't bother me at all. The fact that the number isn't really tied to this car but was "purchased" elsewhere has me concerned.

The car is about 10 hours away :frown:

Re: I may have found a TR3....but I want your advi

Start warming your feet up. I don't think you can make a good decision without seeing the car for yourself, or getting someone you trust to look it over for you. I would not be concerned about getting a title for the car as long as you have a title from the seller - I'd only be concerned about it if you had your heart set on a car with a verifiable history, full matching numbers etc that you could eventually restore back to original condition.

As 'bitsa' TRs go - I've owned a couple and this one looks a lot better than what I had!
