help w/ oil leak location

Well the Crypt Car has been in the shop for
two days of diagnostics. Even made it home
without breaking down. Whew!!

One oil leak we could not determine the origin.
Your kind help in pointing me toward gaskets
or oil seals I should purchase along with the clutch,
trans mounts, U-joints, steering rebuild kit,
entire car mounts, motor mounts, carpet, gas pedal
linkage, emergency brake system, etc.

Oil drips from the clutch slave cylinder but
it is engine oil coming from above. It looks to
originate in the general vicinity of trans/engine junction.

Since we are going to pull the trans- what gasket or seals might be causing this leak? It would be an easy task to replace with the trans out.

thanks

If you're going to pull the transmission, it would be a good idea to go ahead and pull the flywheel and replace the rear crankshaft seal while you're in there. This is the primary area for oil leaks when the oil is coming from the area you describe.

While I tend to agree with Terry and that is a MUST if you are in there this far, I'm still wondering about that darn leak that Bunzil was chasing from the bolts on the back of the engine lift bracket below the head.

I wish that he'd post his findings so we'd know for sure. That could cause your oil leak because I believe that it's doing it to mine.

Thanks Terry: Will do

Paul, we also discovered 4 U-joints were
contributing to the Klunk. So they are also
on the list.

FYI: Ceasar is a highly skilled mechanic who has restored
an old MGA to pristine condition. He offered it to me two
years ago for $20K.

Yes, he DID remind me of that fact as he helped me compile
quite a long list of parts to order from TRF.

No frame rust which is good. All the body to frame mounts
rotted. And for a real oddity, all the wheel studs, except
the two I replaced are hard welded in-place.

Ceasar drove the Crypt Car fairly hard this afternoon and
declared the engine to be strong. He wants to remove the very loud after-market high performance exhaust system
and put in TR sounding system. I agree.

So it looks like the Crypt Car will be back in the cypt
for a few months more. But heck, I think I got just over
20 miles driving time this go around. 6 of which were pure
pleasure!!

Hey Terry! Welcome to the forum. Nice to have you here.

Now your talking! An LBC qualified mechanic! No need to 'train' him about LBC's. That news alone is great. That and the 20 trouble free miles. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Tinster,
Assuming your car is a TR4/3. Those cars had quick change wheel studs to be able to go from wires to steel wheels and back. Often the hub threads were over torqued and got sloppy so many would spot weld them from the rear so they wouldn't back out. If this is an issue you can get oversized based studs and drive them in from the back for peace of mind (I'd recommend that) as losing the studs can be a bit unnerving. I purchased new hubs and they come with the conventional stud placement from the back. Also gives you the opportunity to replace all bearings/seals.

Tom,

That has been my goal the entire past
nine months- to get the Crypt Car operational
so I could get it Ceasar for diagnostics.

Some diagnostics are difficuly for me because I do
not KNOW what a TR6 is supposed to drive like,
sound like, how they are put together, etc.

And an even bigger plus for me, Ceasar has agreed
to a reasonable fee schedule concerning use of his
lift and his time. I agreed to assist with some
architectural lessons in marble and stone diamond saw
cutting for Ceasar's home. As well as some graphic
design work to help him expand his business.

A win-win situation

I am finally feeling fairly positive the Crypt Car
can be made streetable and will neve see The Crusher..

regards,

This is a good time of year to do this Dale. After all you surely wouldn't want to risk an accident on the snow covered and icy winter roads of P.R. right??? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazyeyes.gif

And don't forget all the "snowbirds" that migrate
here in winter season!!

Mostly ballenas from NJ that lie baking on
the beaches. LOL

Terry"

I could not locate a rear crankshaft seal in the Roadster Factory parts book. Can you supply a reference for me?

thanks

d

I love it when Dale smiles through a post. Even though he's rounding up parts again, I'm sure that he is beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Also, he got to drive it again and that's what really gets you hooked, as we all know.

Well Paul,

Everything in life has some kind of price tag.
Wendy has no idea how much $$ I have dumped into
the Crypt Car. Only that it is substantial and a
huge $$ TRF order is about to be made.

Wendy's price for all this disruption?

It seems Monday we leave for almost 2 weeks
at sea where Wendy has booked us an upper deck
suite on Royal Caribbean. Island hopping from
PR to Venezuela and return.

Shore excursions that will be really cool.
One day spent on a Tall Ship rigged out as a
pirates of the Caribbean movie ship.

A day of 4X4 Jeepin', etc, etc

d

Be careful there KC!

I have friends in Coloma, Wisconsin.
I might just give up on the Crypt Car
and start building me a Spit from parts
obtained from WI. !!
