Gonna try and get my Six [ Amos] running again

Feels like it's time to get my bucket of bolts, old 1969 Triumph TR6 out of moth balls and back running in the street. A five month sleep due to extreme summer tropics heat and monsoon rains. I wonder how difficult it will be get Amos going again? He was running pretty good five months ago.

If the battery is charged up, a turn of the key should get it fired right up. Five months of sleep is not that long.

When I started up my TR6 it had been sitting for 3 years. I had to replace the starter because it was bad, but after that, with a charged battery, I just turned the key and it fired up. It ran rough for a bit because of old gas in the lines, but once it got to the good stuff and warmed up, it smoothed right out.

How about the battery charge and additive in the gas tank? Check the fluids, and that the fan belt is tight. Air the tires and go! After you start, check that the battery is charging.

My 4 sits for 4-5 months every year through the winter and has fired right up on the first warm dry spring day for the past 8 years that I have owned it.

added 1/2 tank of 93 octane plus 6 ounces of SeaFoam.

"Huston- We have primary ignition under full choke at fairly steady 1200 RPMs, but no lift-off today.Cannot full throttle; will hit 3000. Engine dies without full choke. Engine shut by control tower down while holding 1200 RPMs.

Tomorrow will clean points and vacuum gauge set the timing.
I think the project is a "Green Light" and the car needs to be in the street for an "Italian" tune up. No slur intended. Old school guy.

make sure your fuel filter hasn't sludged on you. full choke is a sign of poor fuel flow.

Thanks a bunch Steve!!

I didn't think of that one. Easy enough to check
and I've got spares of almost every component of the car!

Thanks again.

I was surprised how easily the car started, given it's
dismal history.

Ethanol i.e. bad gas ,put as much good gas in as you can and burn it out before refilling the entire tank with good gas.

Dale, I ignored the Herald for nearly a year, while dealing with more urgent problems (moving, work, kids.....)
After a year, I hooked up the battery, and it turned right over, just didn't start. Finally the brain turned on, and I noticed that the gas tank was empty.
A quick trip to the gas station and it started right up on the first try. Just make sure you have the normal stuff, coolant, oil, gas, and you should be just fine.

When you take it out for the first drive just take it easy, make sure that the brakes are working and have a great time.

Dale, I forget which carbs you have in Amos, if they are the SU's, make sure the gas hasn't gotten the needles stuck. Sitting overnight with fresh gas might even have freed them up a bit.

Keep going!

Just visiting and saying Howdy Pat.
Not gonna be a regular.

I learned my lesson 2 years ago that I
know almost nothing about the TR6 auto and
it's best I render no opinions and keep my mouth shut.

I got new license tags and emmissions stickers for Amos this morning.
Hopefully, a very detailed tuned up and replacment of the ignition system and I'll be in the street again.

Thanks for thing of me.

Hi Pat!!

Point made in spades this afternoon.

Note to self: After putting the car away for 5 months and trying to bring it back to life, let's us not forget one important item.

After cleaning and adjusting dizzy points, new gas plus Sea Foam, the engine will be be much more willing to ignite if the dizzy rotor is also re-installed.

Timing set at 10* advance ,Engine sitting at 800 rmp idle, some choke required. Rright now, gonna let it burn for 1/2 hour to wash out any gasoline varnish that might have developed.

just sayin'

BTDT.

"why won't this miserable thing start"

"oh"

I had an even worse one. First got Jehu on the road after 4 years. Had it out for it's first test run, running great, all of a sudden it quits. played with choke, key, starting to slow. All of a sudden it comes back with a POW.

Next morning on way for inspection, it dies again, this time I drift to a stop.

fiddle, play. dist cap off. play some more, it's acting like it's off time. What the dingdong?

Cap off again, just happen to bump the rotor, and it moved??

hmm, new rotor and the contact on top is burned already. Here the rotor jumped out of it's notch and was pointing where it darn well felt like it.

Retensioned the spring on top of the rotor and haven't had a problem since.
