I cleaned up my old Bugeye sending unit, getting ready to install it in a new field tank.

I'm assuming this is an original Smiths unit. Don't know if it works or not.

How can I test it while on the bench?

I would think that just connecting a VOM meter to check its resistance as you move it slowly through its range would do it. Visually it looks pretty good. I think that the major problems with them is the lever not making contact or the resistance coil having a break in it. May also have some continuity issues at the terminal end's.

0 Omhs at one end and 80 Ohms at the other.IIRC.
 
I always connect a ground wire from the case to one of the bolts holding the gas tank. This assures a good ground.

Looks like an original unit.....some of the aftermarket ones are junk!
The aftermarket units have a very coarsely wound coil.
 
Thanks, I'll put an ohm meter across it and move the float and see what I get.
A ground wire sounds like a good idea, too.
